My first road bike was a less than pristine yellow ss50 back in 1981. I put the barrel and carb from an old c70 on it and it was the fastest "50" in my town (i didn’t tell anyone about my little upgrade for years). I have ridden constantly since then and have owned at least 20 bikes since then and currently ride a 1995 speed triple but looking back i had more fun on that little puke yellow thumper than any other bike I've ever had. Happy days!

You only get one "First love" and almost everyone who had an SS50, loved theirs.

Ich hatte so ab 1974-75 eine Honda SS50 Super Deluxe. Sie war mein Traum Moped und kein stinkender Zweitakter Punkt danach habe ich mir eine Honda DAX ST 70 gekauft und die habe ich heute noch😊

I love seeing this classic moped being lovely restored back to health. When I was 16 yrs old an ss50 was my first bike and love, my mates had Yamaha fizzy’s and Suzuki ap50’s which were faster but mine was much better built and better to ride. One day I will get another ss50 and put that smile back on my face.

@@lauramaunder7152 I always will have a soft spot for this bike, one day I will find another and Im sure it will be loved just the same. My SS50 cost me £90 back in 1976, had been looking for a moped for a long time then saw mine advertised in local paper, was down there like a shot and the rest is history.

@@anthonylong9497 1976 I bought my SS50 second hand for £80, learned to ride it in the car park behind the bike shop for ten minutes before riding it back home :) . Still riding bikes for fun.

Beautiful job. Honda SS 50 ( four gear) was my first bike 1978. I was only 15 at the time. My dear old dad, in his wisdom, reckoned if I had my own bike I wouldn't be buzzing about ( with mates) on waste-ground on old C50/90 step-throughs and getting my collar felt ( a few times) by plod....It worked. I visited my dad at weekends ( he lived on private grounds with miles of road...heaven!) and had a whale of a time notching up hundreds of miles prior to my 16th birthday when I rode (legally) on the public highway for the first time ( on a motorbike). My mates had Yamaha FSIE's /DT 50's, Suzuki AP's, MZ 50's ( remember those?)and SS50 five gear....all of whom left me in a cloud of blue smoke! I didn't care. Various bumps and bashes and 10,000mls putt-putting back and forth to school ( left at 17) and work later...I moved onto scramblers, RD250E's then the first of several 750's. I still have one...a 30 year old Yamaha FZ750 Genesis. Happy days indeed. All the best.

My first bike in 75. Took the carb slide out. There was a scribed line on it. Filled the slide down to the line. Then I could leave any fizy from a standing start Happy days.

Bought mine on the 1st of August 1974 when the new 'N' plates came out. Wasnt very fast but it looked like a motor bike and had a kickstart unlike the European mopeds. It was also a 4 stoke as my dad wouldn't let me have an oil burner. £201 it cost and worth every penny.

The 4 speed with flat bars are my favourite! I've owned four back in my teens and early twentys... kept blowing the 5th gear so in the end only used 4 speed boxes wich where happy even with the 70cc upgrades! Best mopeds ever make fizzes look like toys...What did you pay for the bike and what wax the parts cost?
@grantford90633 жыл бұрын
Hi, sorry took so long to reply... the bike cost just under a grand and I put another 2k into it easily ... the biggest cost was the chrome and getting a new old stock exhaust (450) with cover from the States (100) ... was a nice one to do and we go lucky as the tank repaired really well...

I had a red one, reg no. HKF 266N bought new in July 1975 from "The Bee" Motorcycles in Liverpool (I still have the sales receipt). I had read that the machine was now fitted with a new more powerful engine and thought this would have it, but of course it didn't! I was bitterly disappointed with it; I wanted a machine that would happily cruise around 40mph and of course it wouldn't!. If lucky, it would creep up to 40mph on the flat and in calm conditions but sounded like it was about to shed it's innards at any moment. Apparently Honda had approached the UK government at the time and agreed not to make a too powerful machine!. It was no fun to ride at all and would get overtaken by everything including Puch Maxi's. I only kept it for a year and although it was immaculate and with 5K on the clock, I only got about £130 for it. My abiding memory is that the throttle cable had almost as much slack in it as throttle movement. I took up most of the slack one day to an acceptable level, but then when i twisted the handlebars with the motor running, the tickover speed would increase!. Never could find the air filter either - took the sext off and there was an orifice but no filter as such.

wonder if rusty bearings in engine and piston rings and springs, and why bother with much paint and all , just start it up and ride, much work can get lost in a crash
