Where is part 3? Been dying to see it! Love this build! Absolutely amazing work man! These guys commenting on top end noise clearly have never ridden a proper air cooled thumper! Ive been building up an XR600 with a single sided swingarm and now that that's done and been raced on the track. The turbo conversion is next on the list since the 3rd gear went and took most of the engine with it. Planning on going with an electric driven oil pump on a second oil system for the turbo thus keeping the two separate and hopefully the temps down a second electric boost pump after the scavenge pump in the engine to 2 oil coolers for the engine, I figure heat will be the biggest issue on this build.

Yeah I've been very slack the last few years on a follow up video, I've built another 2 bikes and been renovating my house so it hasn't been a priority I'm sorry to say. The other reason is I have an issue with crank case pressure that I need to resolve, basically excess crank case pressure is effecting how the gear driven oil pump is working and making an oily mess out of the crank case breather. The result is that I loose oil pressure to turbo at high rpm's, right when you need it most. I have a plan on how to fix it after speaking to some guy's that turbo Harley's. I did consider a totally stand alone oil system for the turbo as you are considering, with electric pumps either side of turbo and a separate oil tank but I was really trying to keep the weight down and real estate was tight to keep it all hidden. Sounds like you have a great project with the XR, I've just picked up a 1989 XR600, haven't decided to what level I will modify at this stage, maybe just set up for VMX pre 90 with an alloy fuel tank and a few other goodies. Cheers for the kind words.

Haha know that feeling. Took me forever to actually get around to doing the conversion on my bike. I assume you are still running a carbie? If so which one? How did the boost affect the jetting? Are there any other changes to the motor internals? Your crankcase pressure issue sounds like blow-by, which would happen in the higher RPM's as you hit full boost. The XR rings just arn't made for boost. Perhaps look at getting other rings as well as perhaps changing the type of ring? Im planning on a Falicon con rod, low compression piston possibly 628 with a thicker sleeve, Hot cam, custom ECU for timing and boost regulation aswell as knock sensing, already have an FCR41mm onboard and its a boost ready carb, possibly do supplemental EFI if it needs it and lots of other small bits. Yeah unfortunately the stand alone oil system takes up a bit of space but I'm planning on redesigning the sub-frame to suit the build. Was just planning on putting in a oil pump on the input side of the turbo to keep electrical load to a minimum done the 200W conversion already. One day I'll get around to making a video of it :P That XR6 will look amazing in VMX trim! Keep making videos! Its awesome to see your work and always good to see old thumper's getting a new lease on life and kicking some new bikes asses! Keep it up!

Excellent fab work that thing looks great For those that say the engine sounds noisy... you are correct it sounds noisier than it should be but some of that could from the camera or the environment, although other videos of the same bike online have better sounding engines. Having owned one of these from new I can say they tend to get noisier with age but there is something that I'm sure everybody overlooks when doing maintenance that can sound like topend noise, and that is the chain driven counter balancer in the crank case. It has an eccentric adjuster that only takes seconds to dial in once you get at it... have to remove the right side engine cover and maybe a few internal components to get at it. But with that done the motor will sound a lot tighter so it is worth the effort IMO.

Magnificent work! I have also build two turbo bikes (z650 + cb836 turbo, one with carbs the other with DFI, I have some riding vids on my channel) and am also looking to build an XL500 turbo. Do you have any more vids of actually riding it or something? How where the results in the end?

Cool!, I just checked out your vids. I haven't had a chance to do any ride videos yet, very slack I know. I've got a few little issues to sought out before posting a ride video otherwise I'd have all the professionals commenting. I have a few crank case ventilation problems to sought out.

I think that's the nature of the beast. I've tightened all of mine and it still had the noise in the top end like that. Doesn't seem to affect the performance at all. It only has 4,000 miles too. Anyways what does your boost gauge get to when you rev it a little more? There wasn't a clear video of it when I was watching.
@ranrovmat8 жыл бұрын
Yep, precisely why I haven't commented on the last 3 comments referring to top end noise. Arm chair mechanics that think every other 30+ year old four stroke dirt bike should sound like Ryan Dungy's latest KTM 450SX. The cam is perfect, rockers refaced (re-chromed), new cam chain and tappets adjusted to correct clearance, it actually sounds more "tappety" on the video (recorded with an iphone) than in reality plus the gear pump makes some noise as well. Anyway to answer your question, revving the engine (more than in the video) not under load produces about 2-3 psi, once riding (under load) it builds very quickly to a maximum of 8 psi (standard waste gate actuator setting). It will get to this level of boost by 3/4 throttle and then remain there until a gear change, indicating that the turbo may be slightly under sized but lag is not a problem and there is plenty of scope to increase boost if a boost controller was added.

I don't know what kinda hairy burr you had up your ass to go and want to put a turbo on an '82 XL500, but much respect for doing it. If you have any other discretionary income laying around that you don't know what to do with, let me know! Also, you ditched the kickstart compression release cable,.. do you have to find the sweet spot to crank this thing, or do you just have oak trees for legs? And, why not incorporate that crankcase breather into your induction? Do you believe top cylinder lubrication done in this manner is far overrated?
