Danu, you are not alone. I bought my farm 26 years ago, and I did all the big work myself. Now I'm a 70-year-old woman, alone, and I have learned to delegate. First comes attention to anything with a heartbeat. Then the greenhouses. Then the garden. I have 7 acres of farm, and lots of refuse from the horrible winter. So I rented a 10-yard roll-off dumpster, which can be dropped anywhere you want and the huge back of it swings open so you have easy access to it. I trade and hire help. If you have a group of herbal students, maybe they will donate 2 day's worth of work for class? I would do a massive clean up first, and then start with a specific goal in mind such as "10 feet of wall today". Clean up the clutter or the weeds will take it over and then you have a big mess. The older I get, the more I respect and care for my shoulders, wrists, arms...ankles...and I don't try to pretend I'm still 20 anymore although mentally I feel fabulous. Clean up the hoop house, then you'll have room to store things like pots and rakes and it will give you a boost. That's my thought on your predicament because I've faced the same thing on a large scale. Stay focused and strong!

So encouraging - apart from my fruit trees, for so long, when I looked at my garden I felt so fainthearted as numerous weeds and a variety of grasses appeared everywhere! Since finding your channel, I am now thankful I absently 'neglected' it for the last 18 months. Instead of mowing, hedge cutting and strimming everything in site to create a traditional manicured area, it is now a beneficial haven for birds, insects and medicines for natural healing. I began my journey today making a tincture of whole dandelion. Thank you so much.

It's rainy here in Maine, USA today, so I am looking out my window, from my bedroom, admiring all the compost I but down yesterday on the front gardens. The wonderful thing about your homestead garden is that it is never finished! There’s always another project in progress, loads of land to work with, those lovely weeds give you so many ideas for creating medicine, food and endless crafting projects. The trees, herbs, orchards, flowers and shrubs are simply magical and you’re on the sea too which means that you have an abundance of seaweed/kelp and the joy of walking along the coastline with your feet in the sand. Last but not least you’re in beautiful Ireland 🇮🇪 the land of your ancestors surrounded by their memories and centuries of Celtic Folklore, Fairies and The Goddess, Anya 🌀 Your cottage house is quaint, cozy, and perfectly splendid! The the dogs and cats are such cheerful darling companions. This is why I so love coming to The British Isles, the birthplace of my own grandparents. 🌀 Blessed Be! ☘️☘️☘️

How wonderful. I love all the work in progress and the beautiful flowers. I just love what looks like a straw and mud style house, it's so organic. 😍 I live in the countryside in N Germany. I was born in South Africa, although I am Italian. The weather is amazing in SA. But in N Germany it gets very cold, and windy much like Ireland. We have an old farm house built in 1699. Then we have a 2nd plot that went beserk. It was like a jungle. We asked a local farmer to come over with a tractor with jaws to grip the old bushes that had zero benefit and cleared the plot. Now we have a blank canvas to work with. I left some things. We need to get out all these deep roots. Level and add compost and manure. I'm going to start small. I totally understand how overwhelming it all gets. Having studied permaculture I have these great visions of what I would like, but it will take time. I love what you and Lol have created. Enjoy 💕👏👏💐

Thank you for your honesty. I think when people are not honest it can have a reverse effect and people end up being uninspired because it doesn’t feel achievable. I have a small 1970s terraced back garden but I also work long hours in the week and don’t have the time to work on it as I would like and so sometimes feel overwhelmed like you. However I dug out some photos of when we moved in almost 14 years ago. It was just lawn with a concrete path up the middle and no wildlife came. Slowly I have built this little haven for wildlife and when I see my blackbird and robin friends come to greet me, I feel as if this garden is my greatest achievement.
@DanusIrishHerbGarden
@DanusIrishHerbGarden Жыл бұрын
Absolutely!!! Our land was completely barren when I started gardening. That was about 12/15 years ago and looking at photos it is such a surprise because we are so used to this garden now. Even looking at photos from 3 or 4 years ago the change and the growth is incredible. It is worth keeping a visual record to boost ourselves when we feel there is a lot to do. I feel the same too - my greatest achievement, (apart from my daughters😀) xx

@@DanusIrishHerbGarden Hi Terry, my mother is from East Galway and moved to the states in her early 20s, always regretting it (she moved home at 70 and lived happily til she was 92). I spent summers in Galway as a child. I've spent a good amount of time tripping around Connemara ... and now partially retired, I spend some of my late winter and early spring in Ireland. Hopefully, I'll manage more time in the summer in a few years too. Thank you so much for your wonderful sharing!

Thanks so much for this video. My gardens are divided into a few areas. Soooo, some are more shaded, so hostas & azaleas line a short walkway going to the HVAC system. Then there is the dreaded slope that has many herbs nestled in with weeds! And then there is the small fenced area overflowing with flowers & weeds and where my grand dog loves to lay. She has no care about what plant she is crushing. She is not confined to that space, she just likes to be there. Then there are 2 raised beds, with various weeds, vegetables and the occasional day lillies. And lastly, a very shaded garden that is covered in a ground cover by the neighbors invasive species. I could work for the rest of my life and never have it as I imagined. But I am ok with this. I just do my part, and let what will be, be. So glad to see others have more projects than time. I still teach metals in my studio and have had Master gardeners take my classes. There is always advice as to how to make my gardens better, but I absolutely love my yard. And it isn’t all that big, but I do have quite a lot of plants.

Nice to see the Green Shield Bug on a nettle leaf. I've photographed a few species of them with my Macro system camera, I like them! It's a good idea to show your garden as an evolving project, rather than a small utopia. Some people seeing, or hearing a beautiful piece of work, can become overwhelmed and dismayed. They may have wanted to learn to play the guitar for example. This happened to me twice, I'm sorry to say. A person asked if I'd teach them to play guitar, I said I would. I was then asked to play something for them. I've been playing for a good number of years. I played a piece, they were upset, saying there was no way they could ever do that. They decided not to learn to play. was unable to talk them round. I was so upset, I felt bad about it for a long time. What was I supposed to do though, play a nursery rhyme? One plays or works at the level one has reached, there is always more to learn. I think best the solution, where possible, is to give reissuance at the start. Your wonderful video today, demonstrates that what one sees, is not what lies behind it. Like life, it's a work in progress. A Chinese proverb applies here: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step" Concentrate on one aspect at a time, the feeling of achievement tends to encourage one to carry on to the next part. Love and blessings to all. Gordon.

Sometimes when I feel overwhelmed I take out the hedge trimmer and start cutting a small area where needed. Immediately one can see progress. Tho little, it clears the head, and priorties then make themselves known. Just taking that first action is key for me. Love your gracious attitude, natural gardens, and precious animals. Have a cup of tea, deep a peaceful mind, and all will eventually get done in time.

How refreshing to see a “warts and all” KZbin video! So much of what I see is “picture-perfect” and “Instagram-worthy” and very intimidating to try to measure up to. These videos show curated and edited versions of people’s lives and homes, and while they look pretty they make it hard for we regular people to compare ourselves to! I appreciate your honesty in showing and telling how much work goes into your home and garden, and how sometimes you just can’t get it all done when you want to!!

I love this video so much, Terri. I live in the US (New Hampshire) and moved to the country for the first time in my life in 2020. I'm 69 now and live alone. It's paradise here, but when spring and summer come, Bug Season arrives, and it is truly monstrous. Mostly the ticks, black flies, and deer flies make it almost impossible for me to garden. I named my garden Mystery Garden last year because I finally just let it go. Amaranth appeared out of nowhere and grew to 8 feet tall. There are beautiful wild weeds growing profusely here - Yarrow, Mullein, St. John's Wort, Mugwort, etc., etc. This year I'm going to be in observation mode and only do what I can. We have a wonderful farmer's market, and I like to support the farmers. Thanks for your honesty and, OMG your herb hut/house!! Beyond precious, and I'm wondering when the fairies will move in there!! :) 🧚‍♀🧚‍♀🧚‍♀💚

Your comment is encouraging. I’m 66 this summer and live in Edmonton, Canada. I grew up on Air Force bases and have always wanted to move out of the city to an old farmhouse with a few acres. My husband says we’re too old while my niece says “we are not to old and it is not too late”. Your experience gives me hope I might be able to convince him. No ticks here, they are too afraid of our enormous mosquitos.

@@DanusIrishHerbGarden Terri, I have been binge-watching your videos since a friend recently signed up for your course and told me about you. I've gone all the way back to your first video and am working my way forward. Absolutely love them and they're feeding my love of Ireland. I hope to return one day. As for the bugs, well, it feels silly to complain about them, but those deer flies take a chunk out of you and easily get infected. I've learned how to cope and have promised myself not to complain too much this year. We always hope for the wind to reach a certain level to blow them all away! The ticks, well, that's another story. I refuse to buy into the fear but they're just nasty and not fun to deal with when you live alone! Ok, enough complaining! Happy Belated Beltaine! 💚

@@janeandclementine Oh my goodness, you are NOT too old! I'm not gonna lie - the move itself was stressful (always is, no matter what age) but it was the best thing I've ever done. I had a mantra - "I want to live somewhere where I can walk out my door into the woods, and I can see mountains." I wish I could share a photo here because that is exactly where I landed. Total manifestation. I hope you can convince your husband! And, lol about the mosquitos! :)

Oh my goodness. This is so uncanny. I recently found your channel and immediately allured & motivated. Terri, the timing of this specific video is so uncanny. Last night I was watching an older video of yours. Your very talented camera-husband had a stunning shot of a spot in your garden backlit by the sun. It was absolutely beautiful! There was a shot of something that looked like a silver dollar but it appeared orange. There were beautiful flowers surrounding the silver dollar. I did an intense Google search and could not find anything explaining the growth cycle, the metamorphosis of this plant. Imagine the serendipity I felt when I began watching this video! Thank you so much for sharing your garden and knowledge. I have been very motivated, encouraged and, surprisingly, successful in my gardening lately. I have become more mindful in the plants I buy. I want to know their purpose within the ecosystem and medicinal and culinary uses. Now to continue watching the video. Joanne, North Carolina mountains USA.

I was more or less forced to stay on my tiny place due to work loss. This is a great blessing as a lot of natural things built up around that I couldn't get to having to work off site fixing cars etc. The build up was quite substantial and I was a little frustrated two. Two things come to mind, make sure one makes a peaceful spirit with contentment a habit. Then, with your basic organized "to do" list, be flexible and not to worry or stress at all. Second, an old timer told be once (before I became an old timer) ... "Inch by inch anything is a cinch". ... coupled with "avoid the alligators". The latter one has to do with not being pulled into something that takes a huge amount of time and it keeps taking it. ... Keep a good sense of humor and it is good to learn from you folks.
