This one's for all the calculator lovers Hello friends, here's our latest Honest Government Ad - part of our Climate Sh*tf*ckery series in which we’re picking off each one of our government’s (and many governments’) strategies to avoid taking serious action on the climate crisis. We started off with the Kyoto Carryover Credits, then we looked at EV policy (FFS); then the infiltration of our science agencies. And in this HGA we look at one of the key pillars in our Government’s “Technology Investment Roadmap” to reach Net Zero emissions: Carbon Capture and Storage. I plan to cover others as we head towards the election. It’s my hope that these HGAs will help to improve public literacy around climate and energy policy, so that more people will be better equipped to recognize bullshit solutions to the climate crisis when they spot them in the wild. We’ll dive into more details about CCS in the Podcast companion for this HGA, which we’ll aim to publish early in the new week. And we’ll add the PG version to our Teachers page shortly. If you want to control Climate Change, then you need to control agricultural runoff killing off phytoplankton, and you need to utilize ruminant agriculture to restore deserts into grasslands so you have enough of a buffer to reforest the planet.

I never say that human caused climate change is an issue, because as a historian I know that the climate cycles constantly. There are a few points where humans have caused themselves more trouble, but the climate crisis as they like to protest is simply that our changing climate is going to affect their pocketbooks. For example when we reach absolute zero ability to pump water into the Colorado basin, which we're not that many years off of, property value in Arizona and New Mexico is going to basically get divided in half. Some places like Vegas exist exclusively because of reservoirs pulling water from other regions. But rather than dramatically changing their way of life, especially in ways that could affect their income, instead they are just protesting a border wall made out of containers.

Okay, but they should be completely honest. The materials needed to make renewable energy means that it can't be completely emission-free by default. The materials from solar panels, windmills, electric car batteries, etc can't be recycled, they're going to landfields. Weighing the pros and cons, state-of-the-art nuclear reactors are by far the best option.

It could well be true that the current government is the worst in history, but I don't think that's the best way to look at it. It allows us to feel comfortable in the idea that all we have to do to fix everything is vote these bastards out. You can sell offsets based on theoretical future carbon storage rates and log the trees for lumber once they are big enough. Just replant new trees and resell... I mean sell *new* offsets. What about biodiversity you may ask? Eh, who gives the fuck about it since it's not part of the requirements. Just plant monocultures and enjoy the ka-ching.
