Majority of Puerto Ricans want to remain a territory because it comes with US citizenship and more tax dollars are put into Puerto Rico for amenities and disaster relief. It can’t be a state because its economy would not positively contribute to the US, and that’s the threshold they look at nowadays. They can vote for independence and they don’t want it. Reality is it’s a small island constantly being swept by tropical storms. US helps its economy. There’s not much money in Guam either, and I know people who felt really lucky to have the opportunity to get their career in the US because Guam doesn’t have many opportunities.

Or, I guess, if they wanted to minimise effort, they could use just pair off votes for democrats and republicans, since actual numbers don't matter, only which one has more votes in each state. In this case, the nervousness would still be there, just instead induced by an ever-growing pile of unpaired votes for the democrats, their hope for the pile of votes to find partners diminishing with each passing minute... which I think is a stronger mental image and would probably be more nerve-racking for the poll workers than abstract numbers ticking further apart!

Politics are dirty and deceiving, but although there is a political party here in Puerto Rico cheering for statehood, its politicians have been very corrupted throughout the years, letting the island in a bad situation financially speaking. Also, although the puerto ricans support statehood, the United States Contessman gnores those referendum like they do not exist.

Voter ID laws are a huge pain in the ass. I moved about 12 years ago from my hometown, in the same county. I went to vote for the first time in my new town and I had to produce a piece of mail from a utility or my bank, with my actual street address on it. But I had a PO box. The box was not an acceptable address. But mail doesn't even get delivered to half the addresses in town... I had a free box because I lived in one of the places that didn't have a mailbox. Then I thought to myself, what about homeless people? They definitely are not disqualified from voting... Or are they? The whole thing is just a roadblock. And for me, it's a huge source of anxiety. I can't imagine how much worse it is for people whose mental health is worse than mine.
