The biggest con for me was the amount of private events during our stay. I had to listen to Karaoke til 11pm right outside my room. During the day I watched the staff clear a huge section by the main pool at peak pool time to set up for a party. Overall I'd go back. Food (especially the Mexican) was amazing! Some "formal" dinners took 2/3 hours.

I was on Arte side in casa artistas. Several nights there were events outside my room. They go til 11.

Xcaret park only cost us $500 Canadian for one day including one meal at the buffet; if staying till close you’ll need to buy another meal. While the park was interesting and there was a lot going on I would say that is a very high price.. there are so many extras you have to pay for if interested it adds up. If you can’t handle heat you’ll have a hard time seeing everything and making it worthwhile.. we didn’t stay at the Xcaret but at another hotel; unfortunately we didn’t check how far it was; 2.5 hr drive because busses go to multiple resorts; you only have a choice of leaving at 4pm or 9:30.. so many ppl and families left at 4 because of the heat exhaustion.. it was too bad that busses didn’t leave at 7pm as well.. snorkeling area is super crowded and so is the river because everyone wants to cool off.. on the positive side, buffet was very generous I would recommend going at opening.. they are $45 per person.. most restaurants are buffet.. if your family has been to an aquarium, seen dolphins or stingrays.. the novelty of the rest isn’t worth the $.. you can swim and snorkel at your hotel anyway..

Just come back from all inclusive Bahia Principe. Could use 3 hotels. Riviera Maya It was stunning. Loved Mexico.

Only one meal; if you are staying full day you’ll need to eat again. It’s a very long day

My biggest/only issue was the life jacket policy in the gorgeous labyrinth of rivers throughout the hotel as I was constantly being hounded and whistled at by the lifeguards that... are free to recreationally swim without lifejackets. Same jerks that then whistled at us for playing catch too far from each other in a private area in one of the pools. My entire trip was spent getting detention slips from hall patrol. The whole point of going to Mexico is to escape the red tape and enjoy the lack of rules. I mean, you can't sit there and be ok with several inherent risks at the parks they own while laying the law of the land on guests attempting to enjoy a casual swim on a property that has zero ocean access. Good luck even getting within 5 ft of the ocean without more whistles too. Not sure I'd return because this was a daily thing that would piss me off while trying to decompress on vacation.

What about side trips? I take it the valet can arrange trips to Tulum and Playa del Carmen. Are these trips worth the direly inflated prices? Is it safe to hire a driver/guide now, or should we stick to big groups like buses?

Yes I think they are worth visiting if you want to get off the resort. Tulum is a lot more expensive than PDC but has a more bohemian vibe with better beach clubs, etc. You can hire a private guide or do a group tour to the Tulum Ruins or nearby cenotes. Both are typically safe as long as you take basic safety precautions

Being expensive is 100% a con. We are looking at over $12,000 for a family of 5. I'm not sure if this will be worth it.

If a single person is looking to make a trip to Cancun area, and they want a more adults-only experience, with a good beach, and partying and late night activities, the Xcarat doesn't look like the place for me. What would be the best resort in Cancun for that? Would Playa Del Carmen be a better choice than Cancun, and if so what resort? I still want all-inclusive, but less family oriented.

Did you find a resort? I'm traveling solo also and booked Xcaret. It does seem more of a family friendly resort, but with the natural surroundings and spa, plus great tub in the room, I think I'll be pleased. (I hope!)
