I'm pretty sure this song was inspired by the story of Little Mermaid, that's why they mention "disappear into foam" (the mermaid would disappear into foam if she doesn't kill the prince) "burn me with that knife" (the knife that mermaid try to use to kill the prince). But in this song, it's actually the prince's point of view of that story. I just love this song's lyrics, sad but beautiful.

I was mesmerized by the influence of this song. I was just a fan of EXO I really liked Wolf when it first came out, I felt the difference among other artists, anyways, XOXO album's first part was just released that time and I was enjoying the album, one day around that time my sister showed me a clip of Little Mermaid where Baby Don't Cry was on the background and it was at that moment I felt an emotion that I've never felt before and then Growl came out and baaam I'm a senior EXO-L till now 😂❤

It's a song inspired by the fairytale of The Little Mermaid but it was from the man/prince's P.O.V. I think it's a heartbreaking love song that used the story of the little mermaid as a referance. The lyrics mentioned something about exchanging the fates. She was supposed to 'kill' him but she could not bear to so she decided to let go but the plot twist is -- he knew everything and in order to protect her, he would be the one to sacrifice himself.

EXO is very great at singing with such emotions, especially with songs like this, then add the backstory to it which was inspired by the original story of the little mermaid (but in the prince's pov) it hits 100× more. And then you have the live versions having Kai & Sehun interpreting in dance with such emotional facial expressions it's beautiful impossible not to cry most of the time. The cover of the album actually makes reference to the name of the album, which is called XOXO (Hugs and Kisses) the logo with the heart represents the kisses and the circle logo represents the hugs, the original Exo logo is an Hexagon!

1:17 it isn’t, actually! This is just the logo for the album. If you look closely, all of EXO album logos have “ EXO “ written in them in one way or another. For example, for the album EXODUS it’s a hexagon, for Love Shot it’s a diamond, and so on. This one in particular also denotes “ XOXO” since that is the album name. (Growl is the repackaged version of the album XOXO). This pretty much started since Chanyeol designed the first logo, which was a hexagon that also spelled “EXO”. Also, The symbol for EXO-L is creating an L with your thumbs up and pointing your pointer, like a 90 degree angle between thumb and pointer ( sorry idk how else to explain this 😂)

i remember that exo once explained before. this song was inspired by "the little mermaid" (인어공주 in korean), but the exo members were in the prince's viewpoint. the original storyline was that little mermaid couldn't kill the prince to dispel the curse since she loved him too much even if her love wasn't reciprocated, so she chose to suicide, jumped back to the ocean and spreaded into foam. there was, somehow, a twist in ''baby don't cry''. actually, the prince did have feelings for her too, but he'd never accept that she had sacrificed a lot just to stay beside him silently. even if he bared his heart to her, she would still not be able to recover her voice. that's why when he saw little mermaid with a knife about to kill him, he sincerely wished she would have done it. the relationship ended up in tears and torment as the night kept falling down.
