The lyrics you were confused about. She is basically quoting the guy. In short he said he hopes she will be OK and eventually sleeps well. That she finds someone who loves her more than she loves herself. He is also sorry that it couldn't be him. And her answer is that those words are hurtful. She asks him if he is sure about his feelings and is sad that she didn't have a chance to show him how much she cared about him. Video ends with him cutting his ties to her and falling away from the symbolic place in clouds they build together. And she is left hurt, having to slowly cut her emotional ties to him as well. I guess you have to experience this kind of a breakup to understand the lyrics on the first listen. Also lack of quotation in english lyrics is somewhat confusing but understandable. Normally you listen to the song, not read it. I'm guessing it was written to be confusing on purpose. On first listen you should think it's her words and then have a sad "Oh..." moment when she starts singing her answer to him.

It’s break up song. Ending scene portrays the “scenes” during a break up when a person reminisce his/her happy and sad moments with the one he/she loves. Remembering those conversations and past promises. If you watch it again, you will notice different scenes before the string scene. The string is the love/emotions that binds them together. You can see a drifting scene, shaking/falling scene and cutting scene after the each memory scene. It only means that memories alone cannot save a relationship if the other is already fallen out of love. In the end, you’ll just have to cut everything. Kim Soo Hyun’s line is like an ex boyfriend message during the course of a break up. (You’ll find someone, please eat healthy, you’ll be able to sleep again, etc.) Like it is so easy to do :P Ending scene is like an usual ending scene in a break up. :)

Dude, the main actor in this is one of the best actors in the kdrama industry. Best friends with I.U. You should definitely check out his NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES, ITS OKAY TO NOT BE OKAY. It’s a really dark, sad kdrama, it will fit your vibe. Definitely after My Mister, check this kdrama out. What i got from this is they are watching their memories from the first day they met to the last day they were together which is day 999. It wasn't a toxic relationship or breakup, they just realized they were too different from each other so they kind of drifted apart. So they are each cutting their own strings from each other to symbolize that it was a mutual thing and that they want each other to find the person who is more like them and to be happy.

From what I understand, those stings attached to each of them are the happy memories together, and them sort of flying means the dreamy stage of a relationship. In the end where they cut off each other's & their own strings mean that they are trying to forget those memories, and falling off from the dreamy state. Those rewinds of happy scenes represent the process of erasing those memories after a break up. Yes, that is a theater, and both of them are reminiscing their past relationship from there. Also, the channel numbers on the top left corner mean the days of their relationship together.

the song is simply about how they met each each after their breakup as it starts with the line, 'hi, its been a long time' therefore the awkward handshake in the beginning with her in short hair. they go through all their memories together, he says that eventually you will be fine, and live just as you were living before me, 'will sleep again' and that you will find someone you loves you again. he is essentially saying, i am not right for you and is cutting any ties with her (hence the suspended in the clouds scene) but she replies (which is the chorus) that those words hurt more, just be honest, are you sure this is the end. the music video ends with him successfully cutting ties and moving on, whereas she is unable to do so and is hesitant cause of lingering feeling.

Thank you for reacting to my favorite song of IU... This song broke my heart the first time I listen to it. I guess you have to come from a similar place to connect to the song. The lyrics were actually pretty straight forward the verses were what the guy had told the girl in the past when they broke up. And the chorus were what her thoughts and her reaction to those words. It's boys classic excuse when they want to break up "it's not you it's me.", "I need to search myself", or "you are too good for me, I think you deserve someone better." It's very heart breaking to know that IU is the person who is writing the songs and most likely had experience this first hand, how else could she penned it and sang it so beautifully... Some asshole told her this lines in the past makes me throw fist in the air. But I'm sure they're both over it and she's in a good place now. And if it's true then that boy truly doesn't deserve her.
