Im so glad you pointed out those weird lines that im also seeing from the plexi glass on my AFM pinball table. I am definitely replacing with the proper glass. Its distracting for me to see the lines during gameplay.

Yeah, I don’t think anyone pointed that out in their video. I wasn’t sure what was going on the first. I will definitely look into that down the road. I can’t blame them for using plexiglass because that box was pretty heavy as it was.

Really want one of these but haven't gotten the chance to buy one. Good review. I will definitely set my expectations to a novelty furniture piece rather than an at home pinball solution, I think I will enjoy the unit much more if I dont expect a comparable pinball experience. Plus I'm used to pinball fx on switch so I know what I am paying for to some degree. Not even the highest end of pcs can recreate the feeling of real pinball.

I think you were right on mark with the review. I’m hoping changing out the plexiglass for real glass changes some of the clarity issue. And a patch from A1up for some of the playability. There is a free and easy mod to improve the solenoid haptics 👍 The A1up does grow on you after playing more. Also, the Arcade 1up machine should have little to no maintenance, a real Pinball machine has considerable amount of maintenance to keep it going. And the cost vs a real machine is excellent ! Just wish it was a little better
@EvrydayErik
@EvrydayErik 3 жыл бұрын
You’re right on with your comments. I do know how much the maintenance is on a real machine because my friend owns a bunch of his restaurant. He basically leases these machines and the maintenance is included. Yeah this table does grow on you, I think just a little more horsepower would’ve made this perfect. They also need to fix white water.

Thanks for the great video Erik. I don't have expectations of it been as good as a real pinball table but I have to say that the gameplay looked great in your video. It looked really smooth. Yeah I probably should’ve clarified some things, but the video was getting super long. The gameplay is smooth. The ball physics works and I have no gripes about the flippers. I just think it needed a higher resolution or better graphics to bring some artificial depth into the playfield. But yeah, it plays well. Cheers!

All the game rooms in the malls near me closed for whatever reason. They reopened a game room recently at one of the malls but not one pinball machine. They are expensive to own and operate. The real pinball machines require constant maintenance (solenoids, bumpers, flipper actuators, lights). I’m sure the video version of it will be tons less maintenance but i don’t expect it to last more than 5 years. From what I’ve learned with electronics, they never last. My dad had a tube TV for decades. The electronic TVs that I buy don’t last more than 5 or 6 years and we’re talking descent brands (LG, Samsung). I will buy it for the experience and enjoy it for what it is.

Some thoughts... How is it that the resolution 720 and not 1080 or 4K in year 2021? I think higher resolution would make a big improvement. As I understand it, there’s no ability to add more tables. But it’s all software, so I guess users are prevented for adding more tables due to licensing/legalities. If that’s the case, too bad. I’d be willing to pay for more tables if they were available for download. Anyway, it’s still a neat concept and would be interested in trying it out. Will be interesting to see how Arcade1Up evolves them. Thanks for putting the review together.

I don't own one yet, but have been kicking the idea around, and I agree, they missed a lot of opportunities here. Real glass, wifi updates, 1080p, better solenoids- I'd pay 2 or 3 hundred more dollars for that. Downloadable games for purchase, , online leader boards, head to head remote play etc- those upsells could have justified charging a bit more and guaranteeing Arcade1Up a little money on the backend. From a business perspective, this sounds like the marketing and sales teams could have made this more exciting and profited more in the process.

You mentioned seeing a linear visual artifact, which you feel may be associated with the play field plex. There is a small number of people who can actually see polarization in LCD panels. Even if you replace the plex with glass, you're still going to see the polarization artifact. It's more noticeable at the shallow angles we view a Vpin from, whilst playing. Even though I'm legally blind, I've noticed I can sometimes make out the polarization in car windows, under certain conditions. I've even noticed the effect on a $900 flat panel, which nobody else could see, but one other person I know. I thought it was a flaw, but a manufacturing rep suggested I talk to an eye doctor, who did confirm that it was me, and not the screen. Regarding the nudge, you don't need to rock the table. You only need to thump the side of the table, to get the desired movement on the ball Rocking the table, forcibly, will input forces the accelerometer can't process, as they go beyond their rated detection values. I agree, the backbox marquee should've been square, like on your physical Attack from Mars table. I don't have this one, yet, but do have Marvel, and Star Wars pinball tables. I can't see the tiny, little DMD, and had to build a custom magnification rig. Thanks for sharing this.
@EvrydayErik
@EvrydayErik 3 жыл бұрын
Some other people have agreed with me and we do think it’s the actual plexiglass causing these lines. You only see it in certain situations and if you’re looking for it. I think glass would look better, but it would be heavier and this box was heavy enough for me. I don’t mind the back screen, it is a little washed but I’m good with it. Thanks for stopping by and checking out the video!
@ThomasGrillo
@ThomasGrillo 3 жыл бұрын
@@EvrydayErik Well, I did make holograms, professionally, back in the 80s, and 90s, and noticed if I used glass plates that were too thin, or if the reference beam entered the plate at a very shallow angle, those lines were also recorded. I don't know if the side rails will allow for a thicker pane of glass. You might have to drill new holes, slightly higher up, to accommodate a thicker pane. I have seen that effect on a thin piece of plex, as well. Hope you get that artifact sorted.

@@EvrydayErik you are right about the lines. My review on this is from a casual pinball person mindset. If you are like me you will probably love it. I think comparing real tables is a big mistake for the real pinball fan base. That is why it seems the worst reviews I have noticed is always for the Attack From Mars table. These are not pinball. Its like comparing real warfare to paintball. While visually it reminds you of it and reaching that goal of victory can still be exhilarating...it is still not the same. For someone like me it is perfect. Take racing games for example...we all loved them growing up the past few decades. It is nothing like real racing or driving in general. We do prefer better simulations but we can still bust out something like out run and enjoy it. Because we were exposed to the game first generally speaking. So we are not always turning around saying...this is not like real racing.

I bought the Star Wars model when these first released and really enjoyed it....then I started opening my eyes to what vpin could be and how far these machines are from that. I sold the Star Wars model when the price jump hit, so I made all of my money back that I had spent and reinvested that into the AtGames Legends. I found an old Dell Optiplex and threw an Nvidia 1650 in it and was on my way with OTG mode. It was a world of difference mainly with the larger playfield (32" vs 24", but also having a full video board for the backglass as well as a higher resolution. Count in the ability to push the graphics to the max for FX3 and I was very happy. Then I discovered VPX and PInupPopper and haven't looked back. I wonder how difficult it would be to swap out the little computer in there for a better one and put better virtual pinball software on it. The little cabinet doesn't seem too bad. I have 4 real pinball machines, but it would be cool to have something like this for the machines that l like, but don't like enough to actually buy and then figure out where to put. $600 + some relatively inexpensive PC parts that are probably already laying around my house might be a good price for a little virtual machine like that. This thing running TPA or Zen would be pretty neat I think.

I would totally be into upgrading the CPU. My main concern is you can get the pinball game that’s on the table, but can you also find the software for the back screen. And can you sync the two? Let me know if you find somewhere where you can grab all that and have both screens running at once. Then I would definitely upgrade and put a computer in this.

I had no idea this even existed. I guess there would be the nostalgia draw for me too. I had a lot of great times playing "Attack from Mars" and "Medieval Madness" about 15 years ago. I had a group of friends who would head to a lounge that was across the street from the office building after they got off work. We would all meet up there, just have drinks and play pinball for a few hours. It was good times. To be fair to Arcade1up, they did get a decent representation of the actual hardware pinball machines-- a little soft/ pixelated, but still a good effort to visually capture something that was physical hardware in a video screen image. I was able to really get mentally taken back to the actual "Mars" and "Medieval" pinball machines I used to play. I was hoping that your review would show the Medieval castle freaking out... I used to get a real kick out of that when that castle would start slapping around. Does the video pinball ever get stuck in the left ramp cage?...lol. The one I used to play one would occasionally have the ball get stuck in the ramp...lol. But that is just the thing... this is a video representation. Not playing on the actual hardware pinball machine will feel "different" and not have the quirks of an actual pinball machine. I am not sure I would even want to play the Arcade1up version.... I know I would be somewhat let down and just wish that much more that I was playing on a real pinball machine. But I give Arcade1up total credit. It is a good emulation, but just like playing on video game console emulator, I prefer the feel of the actual original hardware systems. I am really at the point of just not even bothering with any kind of emulators, it just lacks certain subtleties of the original hardware that is being emulated. Just my personal preference. I think I will just save the $600 and put it into a savings account and save up for a couple of years to buy the actual pinball machine. Thanks for the review-- I honestly had no idea that someone did a video game version of these pinball machines. It was a valiant effort. I agree with you, if someone hasn't played the actual "Attack From Mars" or "Medieval Madness" they might really have fun with this. But once you played on the actually machines, it is hard to substitute a video game port for the hardware . I don't think I would be very happy with it.

The stool has a graphic that looks like it would had 1up included stools with the pinballs. The added coin door, real glass, the szabo topper and the custom stool are probably worth $200 alone I would guess, but he's done all the footwork installing the pinner mod, and bought extra games. Over the last year I've been lucky enough to be able to play around 40 real tables every few months. This has taught me that digital pinball is definitely not the same as the real deal, but also that it has come a long way and has improved substantially over the years. The latest Visual Pinball recreations by the VPinball Workshop collective for example are seriously impressive (for proof, check out its rendition of Bad Cats or G5K's Attack from Mars). So I guess the ideal solution would be to build your own digital pinball cabinet (if you can) or buy one of the pre-built full-size versions. The problem with the latter is that these can be (almost) as expensive as the real ones, the prices of which have unfortunately skyrocketed over the past three years or so (Covid-19 related I guess). The original AfM now goes for $9,000 to $12,000 and the remakes by Chicago Gaming Company are offered for similar prices. MM original is around $14,000 and the remakes from $11,000 all the way to $20K for the Royal Edition. There's currently an ad on Pinside asking for $24,500 for an RE with some lighting and toy upgrades.

It uses the whole screen but not the whole surface area. There’s a border around the screen that makes it sunken in a bit. Honestly I’m cool with that it’s just that the resolution is so bad there’s no depth to any of these tables.

I used to own a real pinball machine (NBA Fastbreak) and of course its impossible to compare with a digital machine. BUT...real pinball VINTAGE machines - the ones with 20+ years - are hard to maintain. The playfield is filled with little dents and marks that affects the game, theres always broken or loose cosmetic pieces that are almost impossible to find (or really expensive), and you need a good technician to go to your place every 6 months to make a check up. Theres the termites (big problem on any old wood cabinet) and the last HUGE problem: need to move the machine to a new place? Better call 4 friends! These old machines weights almost 400lbs and WILL BREAK! So i really dig these digital ones, but lets wait for the second generation. 1080p is a must!

Great table. Yeah, there’s nothing like a real pinball machine. But they’re far from perfect and not well-suited for my place. It should be an easy upgrade for Arcade1up, just give me a better screen resolution. I liked everything else.
@kevinmach730

Not to mention the cost. It's interesting that I see old video games for as little as $300, but it's tough to find anything under 2k for even vintage machines. And for something that is actually considered somewhat desirable, you can easily double that figure as an entry level price. If you're just looking for a little fun in your basement or garage, these things are worth a look. Hell, the last vacation we took to Gattlinburg for 5 days cost us $3500, I would have had way more fun with one of these tables for 800 bucks.

This is 2021. 720p resolution is totally unacceptable! The cabinet build itself and the artwork looks pretty good, I'll give it that. But it needs the guts ripping out and upgrading to a VPX system. And $600 is too expensive to do that. Might as well build your own. Which I did for less than £1000 for a 4K playfield and many toys including beacons, RGB flashers, strobes, fan, LED feedback, SSF. This thing is a joke for $600. I was never a pinball fan, either arcade or video. But with a decent PC and VPX I'm hooked. It really is pretty damn good and blows that thing out of the water.

@@EvrydayErik Just download VPX (it's all free). Latest version is 10.6 but people are now using 10.7 beta as it's close to being released and very stable. Then search KZbin for installation advice. The BallerInstaller has just been released so for new people that's makes it a hella lot easier as it does everything in one go. I would advise just installing on desktop for a while first and get used to how it all works... adding tables etc. and learning where all the files go. Then when comfortable progess to putting a dedicated PC in a cabinet. This time last year I knew nothing about VPX. Started building my cabinet in July and had it done in August. I will warn you there is a LOT to learn. It is not plug and play like that thing you have. But it's not difficult and the results are far, far better.

I just picked one of these up and I'm pretty happy with it. It's about what I expected though. I love the arcade, I've ran arcades, I grew up in arcades, but I'd never want real arcade machines in my house unless I had unlimited money and space. That's why I've enjoyed the Arcade1Up stuff, even though they company has a lot of faults, their products still scratch the right itch. Seems like the pinball machines were an interesting experiment for them, but I'm not sure if they'll continue with it. Seems like they can hardly keep up with what they've got going on now.

The one dimensional display was kind of surprising to see. Other versions of the Zen pinball tables on PS4, Xbox etc are all in 3D. Even the Nintendo 3DXL tables are all in 3D. Then it just occurred to me that Arcade 1Up are probably using a low spec processor that will only support a one dimensional implementation of the tables. If all of the tables were displayed in 3D, this would be a very cool virtual pinball table.

@@EvrydayErik Yes, I suggest you start looking at the pinup popper baller installer and learn how to use VPX. It does it all and most of the tables and roms are available online. Best thing is the tables on VPX on that same little 1up screen utilize more of the real estate and seem bigger. They made their tables too tiny in the stock games. Especially in my Marvel cabinet. Totally different thing. Sites to look at: VPForums, VPuniverse and discord sites associated with Popper. It' a lot to take in, trust me. Take your time, maybe install the pinball software on a desktop you have beofre hooking it up to your cabinet. You'll need some hardware too, like an HDMI converter, and a usb encoder or two. Cooltoy has recommendations for hardware. I used a button instead of a plunger and it makes it much easier to sort out as well.
