Hey Joose, just thought I would give my two cents about Bali and Canggu. I feel like you haven't really adressed any of the real issues one might face when spending time here. Sure, the hedonic treadmill is a thing but it'll be the same everywhere once you attain a certain level of income in a county that allows you to spend your way to happiness. I'm in Canggu right now and as a new digital nomad it's honestly of the worst places I've ever been to. Sure, Balinese people are super nice and humble and the weather is really good. BUT. Everything feels so fake. The people. The shops. It feels like a bootleg version of Venice Beach. Full of wannabe influencers wearing luxury items while the locals live in slum-like conditions. It's SUPER polluted. Trash is everywhere. Food is often great, but you have 1/2 chance of being sick afterwards. Like, you literally have to eat supplements not to feel sick ? Bro. You can't walk anywhere, sidewalks are non-existent. Traffic is HORRENDOUS. Like, the worst I've ever seen. Forget about hiking - can't do it anywhere. I felt much more relaxed working in Kuala Lumpur. Maybe this is just a Canggu thing, but I feel like the whole island is slowly going to turn into this. Instagram killed Bali 15 years ago and we've been trampling over its dead body ever since.

After a few weeks on Lombok I returned to Bali where I had lived on and off for the last couple of years. I went to a comparatively quiet area in the mountains, but got so fed up with the noise, the traffic, the trash that I went back to Lombok after three days…

I never felt Bali has a depression issue. In fact I see the people of Bali - not the tourists or expats passing time there - but rather the Balinese people themselves as happy and good vibes overall. In fact the "vibe" was one of the best parts of visiting Bali and I've been there many times since 2015. It's a bit ironic to say 99% of people living in Bai are depressed and then also to be sponsored by a therapy service at the same time. I don't know. This just seems to be more about you and your sponsor than Bali itself. Of course depression can be a very real thing and I'm not trying to disrespect that. But my perspective is Bali is an amazing place full of good energy and but anywhere can seem depressed by an individual experiencing depression. From that perspective this earnestly seems to be more a reflection of your own personal journey rather than Bali itself. I'll also say you are really talented at the vlogging and this is only the first time I've had a chance to watch one of your videos so I hope to see more and will watch. Thanks!

Did you watch the whole video? It was more about people moving to Bali and having these issues in the beginning. And I said in the end that yes the title is a bit clickbaity haha. The roads, traffic, and overcrowdedness in Bali definitely makes me stressed and depressed. The locals definitely are much better at keeping calm, happy, and positive almost all of the time. I consistently wonder how and wish that I could adapt that mindset a bit myself. I don't feel stressed in Thailand like I do in Bali (even in Bangkok). It's the lack of infrastructure, lawlessness, pollution, and overcrowded tourist areas that make me stressed in Bali. I lived here back in 2016-2018 where it was more of a paradise, I truly loved it, now those feelings have faded and I've fallen in love with Thailand and other places with less of these issues (even though they have some of the same issues, it's less.) Nice video @JooseTheNomad - you inspired me to start vlogging myself, thank you for that!

I'm still recuperating from my second depression after coming back from working and living in Mumbai for 3 years. The big city isn't good at all for me, there were many other Malaysians working in the city, but it wasn't my cup of tea. I'm still figuring out what was the main cause of my depression, was it the city, was it the workload, was it the unfulfilled expectations of life, was it the many pollutions in that city. All I wanted is to experience working and living in a better city than KL like Europe where I've been once, maybe the unfulfilled expectations in life lead to a depression. Perhaps a mental paradigm shift will lead my mind to a better place, not necessary a place with lots of expectations. Being productive with good results help a lot. 😀

I need to leave a comment and give you my point of view. Of course everything is subjective, and you mentioned some of my points 😊 I am just so disappointed about Bali. I'm a digital nomad and thought it would be a nice place to work there but the reality of things is very different. First of all, literally, I got sick two days after I came here, being EXTRA cautious about what I eat, what I drink. I just feel constant belly pain that just does not go away, I feel dizzy, and of course, it affects my productivity. I thought it would be all about nature, and peace and relaxation, the best place to get work done, but I actually don't even want to leave my place anymore because of traffic and pollution. I actually never felt as anxious and unproductive as right now. I'm so sad to see the island crumbling like that, with all those picture perfect Instagram infrastructures while locals are kinda really struggling to live. It makes me very uncomfortable to enjoy food and fancy restaurant just right besides locals in their house selling everything they find in the street to survive. This is probably the biggest issue in my eyes, it is really not aligned with my values. Of course is just not about bad stuff, locals are amazing and so nice, but I'd love that KZbinrs depicts a little bit more the reality of Bali.
@JooseTheNomad7 ай бұрын
Not every place is is for everyone. But if you want to be in a peaceful nature place why did you think Canggu is for you? Ans sounds like you didn't stay in a good area if you didn't wanna go out because of traffic. In any place you can see bad stuff, good stuff, and anything between. We all can focus on what we want. I think we all know the negatives of Canggu, it can be dirty, has traffic, and Ballibelly is famous for a reason. But you can avoid most of that by knowing where to stay and what to do. Anyway, why not go to Uluwatu? Or just choose a place like Koh Phangan in Thailand. I have always tried to show the reality of how Canggu or any other destination is for me. Of course I haven't made a video where I purposly try to find every negative thing and bad street in Bali... that's not realiry either
@adelinejdk7 ай бұрын
@@JooseTheNomad thank you for your answer! And this comment is not meant to harm you, I just also want to have the chance to give my opinion, it can help other people as well. The reason why I came here is because I wanted to travel and see Bali with my own eyes. I chose canggu because I wanted to network and meet people, and also because I did not expect that much traffic and pollution here in canggu. I watched a lot of videos about canggu and it always looked like a nice place and never like I experienced it. Overwise, of course, I would have avoid the place 😊 Indeed I'm going to Uluwatu in the next days, and Thailand is the next spot I'm visited. I was drawn by Bali because of the amazing videos I watched about the place, and Canggu looked like the best place to be productive while meeting people and being in a tropical and enjoyable place but It seems like indeed, I will be much happier somewhere else. I really don't try to focus on everything negative, again, I'm sure people can experience many great things here, but with my own eyes, I just couldn't see it.

Depression might not be the only battle. I'd imagine that work / life balance may be difficult for some. There's the temptation (obligation?) to drink, party, hang out with friends and keep up the social scene. That could lead to slacking off work, failed business, and loss of income. There must be stories of digital nomad failures that are not being recorded on KZbin. Maybe you know of some.
@JooseTheNomad Жыл бұрын
Yea definitely that's a challenge for many. I know some yes, it happens that people get too excited with the party life here or just doing too many trips, etc. instead of working🤔

Thank you for the video. Are there people moving to Bali who are 34 years old? Isn't it a bit late? I think Bali might be the thing I've been looking for. I will go soon for a trip to see what's going on there, before potentially moving.
