Folks might be interested to learn that The Dude was based on a real person. His name is Jeff Dowd. He was a producer that helped the Coen brothers get their start. He had such a unique personality that they decided to make a movie centered around a character based on him. I had the pleasure of running across Jeff Dowd several times, got to know him a bit. And yes, he's just like the lead character in The Big Lebowski.

For anyone who doesn't know, there's a 2004 'remake' of Reefer Madness that is a self-aware musical comedy. It's absolutely fantastic and I recommend it to anyone I can.

Reefer Madness was released in 1937. Watch the 1942 USDA film, Hemp For Victory. The license to grow hemp that is shown in the video reads, "Producer of Marihuana." The US government tried to erase Hemp For Victory from history after the war. The film was uncovered in the Library of Congress in 1990.
