I remember reading Romeo and Juliet in 8th grade and becoming immediately convinced it was a parody because the plot was so egregiously over-the-top
@jeremytessier5316
@jeremytessier5316 3 жыл бұрын
Romeo and Juliet is not a parody, but it is also not a sincere love story; it is a tragedy. The next time you need to write about this story for an English or literature class, take this, get an A, and thank Mr. Regular: "The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet isn't that they died; it's that they died too young to know that their love wasn't worth dying for." It is first and foremost a story about children who become obsessed with one another and pursue a relationship without the maturity to know what that means or how to conduct themselves. The over-the-top incidents that occur are representative of the incidents young people up till today go through blindly 'in love'.

@@erichfiedler1481 Iambic pentameter is the metre in which Shakespeare wrote most of his works. An "iamb" is two syllables where the _second_ one is stressed. Iambic pentameter means each line consists of five iambs. Basically, it goes "di DA di DA di DA di DA di DA". It's rarely followed _precisely_ (either in Shakespeare or in this video), but most lines of Shakespeare fit roughly into that metre.

Yes, Luhrman's interpretation is flashy, maybe even trashy, and totally OTT, but the thing is *so is the play*. The "world's most epic romance" lasted three days and six people died! The story is not supposed to be something to aspire to. "These violent delights have violent ends" is a warning. Luhrman's interpretation is totally true to the play. And I love it 😅

Remember, the only bloodshed outside of the mutual suicide at the end of Billy Shakes' R&J was the duel w/ Tybalt; R&J'96 is more about a glitzy modern makeover on the old story. IIRC: Shakespeare writes a bunch of tragedies about the weakness and stupidity of man. The queen says "you're great, but you should write a romance!" Shakespeare writes a tragedy about tweens being so dumb they get everyone around them hurt and then they kill themselves because they are so impulsive. Everyone: "it's the greatest romance of all time!" I can only imagine Willie slamming his head into his writing desk after that.

I agree that it's funny, but only in a morbid way given the sad amount of people who think it's actually romantic. I wouldn't be surprised if that opinion being ingrained in mainstream society are why literally thousands of other "romantic" stories are even worse about mistaking lust for love and other unhealthy ideas about romance "should" be.
