My wife & I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary by visiting Prague for the first time in July 2018. Having watched all of The Honest Guide preparing for our trip, we walked EVERYWHERE and loved EVERYTHING. Wandering down every alley and through as many open doorways as possible we found (by accident) U Červeného páva at 2:28 in this video. Cozy, cute and delicious. Since that trip we continue to watch every new video hoping to return someday. We’ve been anticipating this moment when The Honest Guides would also stumble across this great little restaurant. We couldn’t contain our excitement when we saw you introducing the place. Such great memories. Thank you both for what you do.

Dude, can't thank you enough! Was literally hungry, tired and looking for a washroom in Old Town Square today, remembered your video and headed straight for Restaurace Mincovna. My wife, brother, sister in law and I all enjoyed our meals. Friendly service and reasonable price! We even saw you talking to a crowd about the crooked ATMs as we walked by after we ate. As a matter of fact, this being my 3rd time here, haven't had a bad meal here yet (Malostranska Beseda, Cafe Louvre, Obecni Dum, Cafe Savoy). If you're thinking of an idea for a show, I'd say feature the "Grand Cafes" of Prague. So far, they've all been great (Cafe Orient as well, thanks!). Forget Paris & Vienna, the cafes here are the real deal (not too busy, rude or expensive) We visit mostly for the food. We miss it here in Toronto. We had the most wonderful Czech restaurant down on Queen street for years - run by a family that escaped in 1968 - but they retired in 2012 and can't get our monthly Svicková fix. Going to have to visit more often!

Ah yes . Prague deli. I lived at Queen west for many years … used to go there before it was a restaurant, when it was just a deli. I miss their Russian Eggs and rohlicki. The ladies behind the counter used to give my puppy the end pieces of cold cuts . Both of us were very happy. 😊 Loved it when it became a restaurant too, but missed the deli.

You can make Svíčková at home! It's not too hard and I'm sure you can get genuine tenderloin there for a reasonable price too. If not, you can always have a falešná svíčková made with beef shoulder or chuck, really any lean cut suitable for roasts will do, you'll just have to cook it for a while to get it tender. The sauce itself is fairly simple to make, there are plenty of recipes online. The only slightly hard to get ingredients over there might be parsley and celery roots, which are not commonly used in north america, to my understanding, but I saw some people over in the US getting their hands on them. You might have trouble finding czech/german style špek, which is just raw smoked pork fat, though you can substitute it with a very fatty bacon. Other than that it's pretty much just a pot roast with a sauce made from blended vegetables. The dumplings themselves are fairly simple to make too. If you ever crave that fix and wanna make something special on a weekend or maybe for a bigger family visiting, you can find plenty of recipes online.

I was in Czechoslovakia, how it was named back then in 1991, 30 years ago. There was hardly any tourist then, but I went out of the touristy area, about one or two blocks, and I found this really small restaurant where I ate goulash and a beer for lunch. After lunch I realized that the whole delicious lunch had costed me about 60 American cents. A real bargain. I'll never forget this delicious and inexpensive lunch.

Also, there is a slightly easier word for a tip, rather than "spropitné", which is like the "formal" variant, most of the people say "dýško" - pronounced "dee-sh-ko". Also to know, tipping isn't obligatory here in Czech Republic, all servers in a restaurant allways have a regular pay, but of course giving them a tip is a really good way to express satisfaction and will definitely make them happy. I'd guess this is why we naturally adapted the rounding-up system Janek was explaining :)

When I first visited Prague in 1991 fruit dumplings were top of the agenda. Nearly died when my Czech relative cooked me Kynuté jahodové knedlíky in her oven. The four dumplings filled the plate. No wonder cafe's and restaurants serve much smaller portions. Just wish some cafe's etc would not resort to strawberry jam rather than natural fruit.

My mom is half Czech; her grandmother taught her a lot of the old family recipes so I grew up eating Czech food a few times a year. its just when u combine certain types of those things, pork white cabbage and classic cumplings is probably the least good looking (but ofc delicious), but u can try it with different version and it will look better, for example red cabbage, different type of dumplings like potato ones or Carlsbad dumplings etc ..

Really appreciate all the video you've posted. I am planning on visiting Prague a second time next year with a friend who lives there and explore the city (last time we avoided the city due to concerns of covid), so learning about the culture and venues of this town is really fantastic to me. Also I can confirm the food is absolutely fantastic, I visited Na Šancích in Prague 15 after playing minigolf with the same friend, and got the best gullasch and beer I've ever had, maybe we will go there again.

4:12 came to Mincova upon your recommendation. The food was great and prices are better than if you go to any restaurant in the Old Town Square. You'll find most of the customers here are locals and it's not as crowded. The staff was friendly and even got to take a selfie with a waiter.🙂

My hostel recommended a place called Lokal. I enjoyed going there. Appenrently it is very popular among younger people. I ate Fried Cheese which was more or less the only vegetarian option they had. Not very healthy and I am sure I never ever had that much cheese at once in my life before.

I am currently in Prague and I can say that the prices are almost identical to those in Germany. Restaurants in side streets offer the cheapest menu for 299 CZK. The cheapest beer we found is 69CZK. Unfortunately, inflation is also strongly felt here.

Me and my boyfriend visited last week for 5 days and went to eat @Forky's Old Town . It's a Vegan restaurant and it was soo good. He had a beer (0,5L) and I had a little bottle of wine together with a (vegan but so good) sushi pokebowl and a no fish and Chips. Both really tasted like fish/tuna. Together we paid 22 euros for all. Really recommend it! Also nice people working there.

The dish that was 110 kc a yr ago will now cost u 299kc. This was by far the most expensive goulash I've eaten. It was good however not worth the large price tag.

@@VisboerAntonAlso everything here got considerably more expensive due to the war in Ukraine. Europe was forced to switch from Russian gas, that made electricity and petrol cost significantly more expensive, that influenced prices of basically everything else. Then the corporate/commercial greed disguised as the already mentioned economical crisis keeping the prices artificially high.

I was in Prague in 1991 and the food was similar wherever one went. One place that stayed in my mind was a place in central Prague which sold huge chunks of boiled ham, cut from the meat in the boiler and served with cabbage and dumpling. No seats, but one stood at a counter and ate from a paper plate. It was very cheap, but most delicious and very filling. Another meal I had was in a restaurant within the castle walls, but was still meat and dumplings. Tourism was almost non existant and I stayed in the rooms of government minister Augustin Jambor right out at the end of one of the underground railway lines. I wanted to see my then hero Vaclav Havel, but was not lucky enough! U Fleku was fun and full of East Germans on holiday and I am pleased to see that it is still going. One restaurant I found was a circular room built in the Art Deco style, but I cannot remember the name. Never mind, your video has brought back some very happy memories. Thank you.

It is a dish that is prepared for very long time, its one of the priciest meals in the country if u dont count steaks and such things. Its just not posible that it was normal price.
