Honey bee quilt with inktense pencils and thread painting

This is the second video in a series of quilts looking at different approaches to producing an art quilt of a honey bee. This time the quilt has been drawn and painted using inktense pencils before thread painting and quilting. I explain the process that I went through.

I think lighter & less density gives the transparency effect, while brighter colors give a shot of light or luminous effect, so no I wouldn’t do a light blue unless the body has some blue in it too, say a blue-black? I like - best is that center on the body - - the dandelion effect. I also like how you did the legs and eyes giving a 3 dimension in the appendages, that must be mostly the ink? I’m also just starting to use inktense pencils, with my FMQ where I need to change or enhance the color or add shading.....another video suggests using aloe Vera gel instead of water, to wet the the fabric or wet the pencil...and the gel with the color bleeds less too. Very nice to see others doing this combination-ink and thread. Thanks.

Yeah controlling the spread on the fabric is tricky. I usually just rely on having my iron ready, I will have to check out these alternative methods.

This is beautiful and the colour balance is great. Like the other viewer I too would have used blue on the wings to make them look iridescent but I love your finished bee anyway And I subbed

Don't believe the hype about Inktense pencils being permanent. They are not, unless you plan never to clean the item they were applied to. I used Inktense on washed muslin fabric. I tested the colorfastness by hand washing with a gentle soap. All the colors bled out of the fabric leaving behind a ghost of the original image. Has anyone else had similar experience?

Did you IRON (with HEAT) to SET the INK??? It needs HEAT to set it.

I have a little mini iron that I keep beside me whilst I apply the water. Fixing each section before moving on to the next section.
