UPDATE 7/27/2020 moderncastle.com/pur-vs-brita...
**We continue to test and make observations, if the results change significantly, then you would see those updates in the description section of the associated video. We change the order of drinkers, the entrance directions and currently even the height of the drinker**
As of 2020, the preferences remain the same as shown in this video. The evaporation rate would be a consideration if the temps were higher and length of test longer. For the duration of this test, evaporation rates between water sources was not significant/measurable. If the test occurred during a 90 degree day, or for an extended period, evaporation would be considered.
(Evaporation is measured by having the drinkers in position, covered by screen to prevent insects from accessing the water)...
UNEVEN-START: Some viewers have stated that the evaluation is "disqualified" due to the levels not being the same at the beginning of the test. However, if you look at the starting levels, the advantage goes to Well Unfiltered, and Chlorinated Water samples... PUR filtered and Pond Water were the most full. Of these water sources, PUR Filtered Water is consistently preferred throughout the spring, summer, and fall.
Honey Bees seem to drink wherever they find water and often gather at the edge of a swimming pool, birdbath, or dripping outside faucet.
In this video, I give them choices where I can observe their actions and water drinker levels over a 72 hour period.
This is not sugar water, I used four test samples:
Pur Filtered water, which is our drinking water source in the house.
Well water which has not been filtered and is known to have a very high iron content and strong iron smell.
Pond water, which was taken from our deep spring-fed pond.
Chlorinated water which is swimming pool water that has been treated with the proper amounts of chlorine and filtered for swimming activities.
End result? Well, they drank from every sample, honey bees, bumblebees, and yellow-jacket wasps did sample all of them, but showed a preference for the ultra-filtered PUR water.
If you are trying to find these yellow plastic drinkers, I bought these on Amazon and wrote a review you can read. I've used them for many years. Here is a link for your convenience: goo.gl/anX2PV
I think that Dadant, or Betterbee also carries them.
If you are interested in the PUR filters, here is a link to them on Amazon so you can read about that in detail: goo.gl/FptTR5
I use filtered water whenever I'm feeding bees as in my Observation Hive. Good for people too, of course.
Here is the water filter container we have on our kitchen counter in case you're interested in knowing more about that: goo.gl/MtYRv3
