new beekeeper here, tried to start smoker, never would. We don't have pine needles, but I have pellets. I lost an entire hive first time, but apparently another bee swarm killed mine and stole all the honey. I look forward to learning from you. Thank you.
@GrowCookPreserveWithKellyDawn5 ай бұрын
I'm sorry you lost your first hive. I lost my first few too, as I was learning. Beekeeping does get easier. Try starting your fire with paper (I recycle brown paper bags) and make sure the fire gets going and keep giving little puffs of air the whole time. When the flame is leaping from the smoker, add your pellets and keep puffing as the pellets extinguish the flame and start smoking, then add more pellets in the same manner. At first, I joined several Facebook groups and just observed, paying attention to the different types of questions asked by both novices and experts (there are many 😉), learned about many problems and many solutions suggested. My biggest lesson is to never stop learning and do what works best for you. You can learn a lot by watching the bees as often as you can. Their behavior says a lot. Take it all in and make the best choices you can. Happy beekeeping!

Happy beekeeping . 🙏

Thank you! I only get wax moths taking over if one of my hives goes queenless and I don't catch it. These honey supers do not have any eggs laid in them, so as long as I keep them covered, they stay in great shape. I check on them a few times during the whole process to make sure there are no eggs, larvae or cocoons. Thanks for thinking of me though--I appreciate it!

Thanks for the tip on smashing the boss with forge hammer! I’d been sending one character in with sanctuary, but the platform and forge wouldn’t reset so I got only one item. That might have been a bug that’s fixed now. Anyway, with your tip, I went back and now have the scale armor and the mace. I needed the mace to finally defeat the boss because it had 12 hp left after two hits with the forge. Luckily, the mace, with its ability to over-ride bludgeoning immunity, was there at my feet!

@@timothymitchell8310 no, there’s no canola (rapeseed) crops near me. It’s from a nectar source of an early-spring blooming tree/shrub, most likely locust, privet, or honeysuckle, I think. It’s hard to be sure.

When switching the frames, reverse them so the outside edge is now on the inside and vice versa. This ensures that you have higher centrifugal force applied to each area of the comb. I don't see how laterally swapping frames gets any more honey out.

It seems to work as they are much lighter after the switch, but I will give it a shot next time. It makes sense. Thanks for the tip!

How long did you keep this bees to give you this amount of honey
@GrowCookPreserveWithKellyDawn7 ай бұрын
I have been beekeeping for over a decade some losses and keeping swarms, so it's hard to say. The amount of honey produced can vary widely depending on several factors such as the strength of the colony, local weather conditions, availability of nectar sources, etc. However, as a rough estimate, a healthy and productive hive with two supers (each super typically holds around 8-10 frames) can yield anywhere from 50 to 100 pounds (22 to 45 kilograms) of honey in a good season.

Do they eventually recognize your scent and become less aggressive and more tolerable of you? I harvested honey that wasn't capped, was this wrong of me?
@GrowCookPreserveWithKellyDawn5 ай бұрын
No, I don’t think they recognize scent. Each time we open the hive their behavior can be different based on the temperature, nectar flow, how much brood, etc. Sometimes more defensive, sometimes less. If at least 80% of the cells are capped, it should be okay to harvest. Any more moisture than that can result in the honey fermenting. I usually shake the frame and it any nectar drops out, I leave it in the hive for them to finish.
