Yikes! 75 near sunrise? Do I dare mention that the high today here along the shores of Kitchi-Gami was 68.4. Wow! That's more honey than I expected to see! So glad to see it! Excellent situational management. And yes, helpers are good. Diane was out helping me today, moved a couple hives out of Windy Ridge to a new location, "Carlton". Moved another hive a couple days ago to just north of Two Harbors, "Trillium". Thank you Mike! God's Blessings! -Jeff and Diane

It was a hot one for sure Jeff and no need to update temps. I’ve been watching you all’s weather for a week now. 67 in Ely the other day. Helping hands really are a blessing and makes things way more pleasant. Once extracting started, the harvest was way more than I expected, even with partial frames. Amazing for sure!!

Thanks for the video Mike! I liked seeing the old school frame shake method on uncapped frames. That heat and humidity you have down there is something I couldn't dream of dealing with at this point in my life. I had a heat stroke in 86 while I was in the Corps and almost died. As I've gotten older it affects me more and more every year. I'm glad you have people that want to learn from you and help out with the load, it's a win win for everyone. You get to Mentore, and they get to learn from you. Your videos help me in the same way and I thank you for sharing.

I like your idea of removing honey from the brood deeps to free up space for the queen. I have 6 LLHs so I don't see the build up so I'm feeling like there isn't much of a nectar flow this year. Looking forward to initiating my UltraMax this week

On mine, the early capped honey is VERY wet. 19+%. I'm happy to pull some uncapped because it is dryer and helps with the overall %. This is only my third Spring so i dont know what "normal" is yet. Last year was an awful drought and i got less than 150 lbs. Ive collected nearly 700 lbs this year with just a tad left to pull. Im pretty happy with that. Take care Mike. Glad you got some honey.

You mentioned the fume boards are not as effective without the sun...I hit the fume boards (metal tops) with a blow torch to heat the top and activate the Honey B Gone...Looking to extract soon here in Michigan. I normally pull in July, but have been too busy...

I have a buddy down the road that did the same thing. He took the Mann lake boards and ripped out that plastic piece on top and then put sheet metal and he blasts it with his torch. I need to try it.

We started at 5:30 am to pull our supers, and were back finished for the day at 9:00 and it still was miserable. Your 75% figure was spot on for me, last year we pulled 4,000 pounds, and this year it was 1,000 pounds. You have to figure beekeepers are crazy, why would anyone work so hard with so little reward? My answer to that is I just love being around bees....and next year it's going to be better. God's peace brother.

Mike I really enjoy your videos. I have a question for you. Is there a rule of thumb for what size extractor to buy for how many hives a person has. I been looking very seriously at the hillco extractor 9 or the 18 frame. Thanks for the videos. Have a great day my friend
@MikeBarryBees
@MikeBarryBees Жыл бұрын
Thanks and glad you enjoy the videos Jeff. As far as extractor size, there’s really not a rule of thumb. It’s more about how hard or long you want to work as your hive numbers grow. I used a plastic hand crank two frame extractor when I had 15 hives. So when I was bringing 20 supers in the kitchen I decided it was time as I knew I would grow. If you’re happy with just maintaining a few hives, bigger and more expensive doesn’t make sense in my opinion. But I’d say if you’re planning to make honey each year, even if you want to stay somewhat low on hive count, then a smaller electric would be a good investment so you can save time and effort. If you know that you’ll eventually grow in the next few years, then my opinion is you go ahead and go bigger so you’re not like me buying a second one within 5 years😬😬. It’s really about determining efficiency with what you plan to process and what your plans for growth are. HillCo makes excellent extractors for the price and functionality.
