You said that it started raining at the end and they all went in the box. Have you ever tried gently hosing them down during a capture to speed it up? Just curious.

No. that would wipe them out. They know bad weather and head into the box (their flight range is 2 miles), so spraying a box with water would probably just kill a bunch of bees. Usually we just wait for nightfall because when it gets cold, they fly into the hive box to keep warm. We were concerned it would rain most of the night, so it was easier to still get them when it was light. My guess is that there were still bees out that will return tomorrow once it dries up. The two kids there were sooooo fascinated. It made it really fun for us!
