Bee swarm in an oak barrel

A bee swarm settle in an antique oak barrel used for a decoration of my friends front yard. During little more than two months the bees build a combs inside this barrel and released at least one swarm. We took the barrel apart and transfer the bees to a regular beehive with langstroth frames. The bees did not had any brood, but had at least three hatchet bee queen cells, most likely they had young queen, so we did not used any their comb. We put one frame with brood from another beehive, few weeks later the queen was already laying eggs.

Glad you were able to safely move them into a hive body. Currently, I'm slowly moving an 'insert hive' section into a cast-iron 12-inch pipe taken over by honeybees decades ago. They are gentle and co-operating with my working them in. Some far they are 'festooning into the TBH's bars of the insert. and hopefully, I'll have able 2 sections slide inside[safe from vandals], one for brood and one for honey. With the unknown length of the pipe being used by the bees, there could 'bee' a lot of honey stored bee-yond my reach that the bees should load up into the bars of the Insert hive. Time will tell.

I want to learn how to raise bees. We are loosing them , and without bees, We people will die. Dad use to find them in trunks of trees and get us honey. Love your little yellow bee house. It's great to see that many bees.

Those were some rather large bees, much larger than the honey bees I am used to working with. Can't say I've ever seen them set up shop in a barrel before.

I was worried that you would get stung while you did a fantastic job moving the bees into their new home but if you were stung you never said a word - I think smoke tends to tire or disorient them ?? You are truly a “Jack Of all trades and master of all of them” 😁 Thank you for sharing this little bit scary video but very informative and interesting. Haven't seen a swarm in the 4 years I've been here but attracted hundreds of bees after putting in the first pond, not being able to control the algae and had a pile of it where the bees were attracted to the pile of removed hair algae. Problem was the filter didn't have an ultraviolet light to control the algae. One was installed later in the second pond and now having four ponds got another filter today. The koi from four years ago are what my son refers to as "pan size" but they are pets now so no, not the koi please. Unfortunately right before fall, yellow jacket wasps came and the bees disappeared. I put an ad on the local paper that I would remove any swarm, fearful someone had killed the bees from wherever they were coming from, but no takers. I put up a box, put in beeswax in a frame and also added bee-feed but so far haven't attracted any bees. Many people spray them, sadly. A neighbor had a hive started in an old tire which he pulled into the desert and set afire. I couldn't believe it. So I would encourage anyone who feels threatened by bees to contact someone who would love to have them and I'm certain that every town has someone who cares enough to remove them safely. Notable is that in China there are no bees. The fruit trees are pollinated by hand with little paintbrushes. Also notable, pears in China are about $15 to $50 for one piece of fruit. Agent Orange is now being sprayed onto our GMO and other corn crops. Farmers aren't smart enough to plant flowers in the orchards to interest and keep the bees happy and bees are dying then they wonder why. I encourage anyone to plant any bee happy flower and do part to maintain this wonderful earth. It is the "garden of Eden", not an outpost. We are caretakers, we don't have "dominion" (someone altered the translation). Let's all do our part. You, Sir, are special and I again thank you for your posts. Truly heartwarming videos. This is the one I have the most questions about...I have no idea what you're doing...what is that smoke you're putting on them? Does it hurt them? Don't get me wrong, the music is great but I need to know why no one is getting stung...I live in Kansas City and was born in Cuba (the city of Havana) so I'm ignorant about the wild...and yet, I don't eat the critters...even though I don't know them personally, I love them.

Hi! I'm not OP but I hope you don't mind me replying. The smoke covers the alarm pheromones that they release when a hive is under attack. They don't notice them so they don't know that anything is wrong so don't feel the need to defend themselves. It also makes them want to feed so they start eating the honey (so they don't have to abandon it if they needed to leave because there was a fire). When they eat, their abdomen expands which makes it hard for them to bend as they would need to to sting. It doesn't harm them, it just calms them down and makes them less likely to sting.

could not see the queen in the beginning, but she did got transferred to the new hive because couple weeks later the hive already had fresh eggs. And this last summer (thats a year later after the transfer) the beehive had same queen and they were doing very good.

Removing hives is honestly harder than it looks. I've done 10 of them and plenty of disasters did happen, but it did the job and kept hives from being killed. With some practice now I'm much better at it, but I had to start somewhere. Overall I think he did a pretty good job. Anyone who willingly takes on the challenge to handle and potentially anger tens of thousands of flying, stinging insects is all right in my book.
