This movie was very popular in Russia. In the year of 1989 it was shown all around the USSR. The tickets were free, so the movie was seen by all teens. Including me:)

It seems like Hong gil dong survived in all dramas and movies that is made, except for the one drama that was made in 2008. this makes me so sad, because I love that one with Kang Ji Hwan playing as Hong gil dong, but it had such a sad ending that I´m exploading after rewatching it for I don´t know how many times have I watch it now. They could just easily let them live but NO that wasn´t gonna work for them...
@yllejord2 жыл бұрын
I love that ending. They get a gloriously heroic transcendence. It was perfect. The way the filmed it too, without showing any dead bodies. The connection to modern times. The norwegian hymn. Everything. Perfection.

My guess is that as long as it's a feudalist monarchy, or capitalist regime it's fine. Never mind the fact that North Korean society today has more feudalistic elements than it had during the Joseon days, albeit with more fascism.

This movie isn't surprising; but, today China & Japan are in good terms. During historical times on record, Japan well know being supported from some European countries, introduces "Opium Trade" gaining China's riches treasures. There's always revolt among the Chinese people where heroes/heroines arises. Black-robed Ninja's originated from Japan, later on adapted by the Koreans. For those who didn't know history, this is an opener 4 them; and, a nice movie w/ clear screen video. Thank you for an addition of English subtitle 4 viewers understanding conversations being spoken w/ enjoyment. The young protagonist good looking man named Hong Gil Hong did grew up 2 adulthood, been given a role of importance w/c knows acting well. Other casts seen them at other drama series not surprising given assorted roles cuz they're good, too. Scriptwriters/Music Department/Production teams does their job well.

It had glimmers of entertainment here and there but I thought the plot progression was a bit rushed. You get just enough to fill in the blanks yourself but the scene cuts were so random at times. While probably really good for a North Korean movie from the 80s especially since it had no Kim propaganda, it's a 5/10 from me in 2021.
