Thanks for sharing. I born in Hong Kong in 60's. This was what I saw and experienced when I was a child. Very memorable. Thanks again!

I visited Lantau in 2012. Such a different place now, and yet a lot of it is still recognizable. Now you can get to the monastery, and get an eyeful of those spectacular hills, with a 15-or-so minute cable car ride. Of course, first you have to stand in a long line that winds past a gift shop, and when you get off at the end you have to walk past a couple dozen more gift shops. I doubt that's an improvement, although the cable car itself is certainly nice. Thanks for all these videos, Michael - your collection is a real cultural and historical treasure. I hope you can make arrangements to have them preserved in less ephemeral form than internet videos.

Dear Michael As a student in HK heritage, I find your 1951 video is most valuable. The place has undergone great development but many of your places can still be found, eg the rocky shore (0.19), the stretch of water and Market Street (now a bridge was built), the ROUND top stilt house (now one was still there, the rest are now flat top houses), the gate to the temple, the stone temple (now the Buddhist library), the island (Cheuk Lap Kok -- now the HK International airport). Even the tomb in your picture might be identified, once the tomb is found, the neighouring field can be identified. I wish to re-trace your footsteps and make a video for comparison. Hope t do it in January, 2017. I have 3 questions 1. There was a pier in Tai O (near the old Tai Po Police station) in 1951. Why you have to go ashore by sampan? Since your main boat could go so near the rocky shore, it would not be big and the pier would suffice. 2. Was the scene in your video in chronological order? This is useful because I wish to identify the street you filmed 3. You reached Po Lin Monastery at night. How do you spent the night? Keep in touch. If you have other video clips at that time, I would like to see as well best regards C P Ho

Thanks for your comments. I didn't go ashore in Tai O but in Tung Chung Bay. I think that the film was taken more or less in chronological order. The scenes in Tai O were taken at another visit. After reaching Po Lin Shi at night time the monks of the monastry bade me welcome and made me sleep in a guest room for some days. I revisited Po Lin Shi again in 1991, but preferred the monastry in olden days.

I see, that was why you could see the Chek Lap Kok Island. But then if you go from Tung Chung, the path is actually Shek Mun Kap ancient path and not Luk Wu ancient path.

Dear Michael Why we are so interested in the path you took was because in 1906, The Monk Kei Sau also walked from Tai O to the top, exactly along your path. He later founded the Po Lin Monastery. In 1951, the chief monk was Fat Ho. We can still see his photo in the temple.

On a later visit walking along Luk Wu path with a companion we spent the night at the cottage of Prof. Yen before reaching the top.

Michael: I went to Ngon Ping again last Sunday. I managed to find the Temple Gate ('mountain gate') which appeared in 0.57 of your video. You perfectly correct, there was so much overgrowth that I could not even see the characters. I could not view the mountains because of the trees, the cows were of course not there. Anyway I can now reconstruct the whole path which you traveled back in 1951. You might like to view the video at kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooncoKCVo8h2b6c. Best regards

Which pagoda u refer to?
@cphohk8 жыл бұрын
Its pagoda you see on 2.15 minutes of the video. Anyway with the Hill gate 山門 , we can easily find the rest of the places. In Michael's time, it was farming fields, later turned to a tea plantation. I might go there on 2 January. You are welcomed to join

I think bakc in 1951 there is no public transport took you to Po Lin Temple.I remember our family went there in the late 1970s and there were lots of tour buses waiting at Mui Wor Pier waiting to take visitors there.I had a very good vegetarian lunch there. It only cost HK$49 for the seven of us.You can eat as much rice as your like !

I remember that the ferryboat took us to a bay on Lantau. We were set ashore by sampans. It was late and I had to climb the hill in moonlight to reach the hospitable monastery. Their vegetarian meals were deliciuous.
@cphohk8 жыл бұрын
The bay was Tung Chung and you walk up the Luk Wu ancient path. It had been there for many years before you came. The Old Po Lin Temple was shown and it is still preserved.
