Hong Kong Shenzhen 5 day VISA ON ARRIVAL (VoA) is NOT for EVERYONE!!

Definitely not the result I had hoped for when I attempted this video. Eventhough I was denied a Chinese visa, I think it’s still useful to share my experience trying to get the Shenzhen 5 Day Visa on Arrival. Let me know what you think in the comments.

The border has a limited number of applications it accepts per day. While it claims its open from 9am - 4:30pm, in reality they stop accepting applications around 11 and make you wait until 12:30 until you can submit an application again. And then you have to wait an hour or two to submit the application, and then 30-45 minutes to get it processes, and THEN you can go through. BUT if you arrive past 2pm you're unlikely to get anything because they'll probably have exceeded their daily quota by then. There is no rhyme or reason to the system, no information on what's going on, etc. No one at Lo Wu knows the situation at the other borders or if they have visas left also, etc. I saw someone who came from a different border crossing because they ran out of visas there and were sent to LoWu, but LoWu didn't have any visas available either because they had also exceeded their quota. Everyone who works there is defensive and speaks little to no english. Overall hugely disorganised and it appears purposefully so. This is as September 23 2023.

UPDATE, they ONLY have approximately 80-100 (EIGHTY-ONE HUNDRED) tickets they give out a day. They open at 9, the first 40 are given out by 9:30. You then have to wait until NOON if you don't get one of the first 40 morning tickets. At noon you try to snatch one of the remaining 40 tickets then you wait until they start processing again at 1pm, and if you're lucky enough to have a ticket you can wait 1-2 hours for them to accept your application and then another hour to process it. Often they are understaffed. People are standing around confused without tickets because they have no idea what's going on, they sit with their bags/luggage for hours hoping to get in and are rejected (often unknowingly because they didn't know about the ticket system). It's pure confusion and appears more deliberate rather than due to incompetence. COME EARLY OR NOT AT ALL, IF YOU DONT ARRIVE BEFORE 12:30 maybe better not to arrive at all. - I'm reporting this on a Saturday, maybe during the weekdays its better (though most here don't appear to be Hong Kong locals so not sure weekend matters)

Another point to note is that there is nowhere to get water or food there aside from the duty free which sells cookies and alcohol (there are bathrooms) - so if you go to the Shenzhen border crossing with kids hoping to get a day pass make sure to BRING FOOD and WATER with you as it will be between 4-8 hours before you get a visa, if at all. Someone who came at 9am was waiting until 5pm to get their visa, some longer.

I am sure, they didnt understand you at immigration, Mainland visa can not issued at the border for most countries. if you guys walk up at lo wu, ask for the Shenzhen visa, and it is better to have a picture from that visa, it was a small counter left of the mainland immigration booths

Hey there... I will be honest, I never went to that port but they may also refer you to the Lo Wu Port if you go there cause it seemed to me that the Port Visa office at Lo Wu is the main port used for visa on arrival applications.

The visa on arrival lowu office closes at a certain time, right? at like 4pm? and they have a limited number of visas per day and they can uust shut randomly if they've hit that number (as of mid may 2023)

Hey... thanks for reaching out. If you are a national from a country that can't get the visa on arrival at Lo Wu then you have the option of getting the same Visa on arrival in Hong Kong (in Mongkok district I believe) unfortunately not all countries can get this Visa at the border crossing. If you could get it pre pandemic that doesn't necessarily mean that you can still get it now

Hey, thanks for your kind words. According to the Chinese Visa application center site: www.visaforchina.cn/#/guideNav/steps/step1 if you apply for the L tourist visa at a Visa center they advise that an application should be done ONE month in advance but no earlier than THREE months because processing times vary by location. I do think that doing the application in Hong Kong maybe faster because of it's proximity to Mainland. Hey there... according to this source (www.chinahighlights.com/shenzhen/visa.htm) travelers can stay within the whole of Guangdong province which includes Guangzhou as well (not just Shenzhen) 👍🏽

Well, if you are from UK then you also have the option of getting the Shenzhen visa on arrival instead of getting the Chinese visa from Hong Kong. I'm not exactly sure how much either one of them costs though

hey... an accurate list of all the countries that can get the Shenzhen Visa on Arrival is hard to find but I do know that South Africans can't get the visa on arrival. Hey there... yes I think so, from what I heard from a Filipino friend when I lived in Hong Kong just over a year ago the Shenzhen Visa on arrival was available to Filipinos. I'm not sure if this is still the case though 🧐
