I walked across this past November for the 1st time by myself and stayed 3 nights. You have to respect TJ just like you would any US urban location that you’re unfamiliar with. Do your research and put a plan together and stick to the plan. If you don’t do your research and you don’t have a plan, then plan to fail! Yes, Spanish in my opinion is better for your safety and security to understand what people are saying about you? If you’re just looking to go in and bang like Uncle Luke says, then you can definitely manage with Google translator or a similar translator device.

You should state your price up front and your destination, and see if they accept. All those taxi drivers are competing amongst themselves for your money. If I come back to san ysidro border I tell the taxi driver "$7 for san ysidro?" And if they agree I go, and tip 2 bucks usually at end of ride.
