My father's close mate, Jerry Moreby, was wireless operator on the Sunderland that flew up the Yangtse to bring a doctor to the Amethyst and to take off some of the wounded. I agree with Mike Taggs comment. I was also privileged, about 10 years ago, to meet a veteran of HMS Cossacks mighty feat in Norway early on in world war 2. Ordinary blokes who did extraordinary deeds.

Don't prove how stupid you are. Great Britain has a number of preserved Naval warships. Probably the most famous being Nelsons flagship H.M.S Victory. We happen to have several other warships from different periods in or proud Royal Navy history, cruisers, destroyers and submarines.'Ready Aye Ready'.As to writing that "Britain could not think of a floating museum", you should "think" before opening your uneducated, loud American gob.!
@harrymason89826 жыл бұрын
Don't be stupid. Britain has many Royal Navy preserved ships that are now museums, probably the most well known is Nelsons flagship H.M.S Victory, then there's H.M.S Belfast moored in the Thames in London. There are various ships from a long distinguished fighting career in the Royal Navy from different periods in our proud illustrious Naval tradition and history. You say "Britain could not think of a floating museum", unlike Amerca. You really need to get your brain in gear and "think" before you make such stupid statements.
@dayofhappiness6 жыл бұрын
I wasn't talking about Victory or Belfast , I was talking about the ship related to the video viewed -.The Amethyst . It was a great feat that H.M.S. Amethyst and crew did in that battle and I think that she should have been saved
@plymouth57146 жыл бұрын
dayofhappiness, you are quite right in many respects - our museum ships are often saved 'for the nation' by public demand alone, our own government and often the MOD as well have absolutely no heart or soul when it comes to saving 'obsolete' vessels for the nation. Our very own HMS Plymouth was a perfect example, she was the last British warship on which an enemy power surrendered (at the end of the Falklands War) and yet despite a public fund to save her for posterity, our city council not only wouldn't give a penny towards the fund, they deliberately put every obstacle in the way of bringing her home to Plymouth. The northern harbour authorities where she was berthed then illegally sold her to a Turkish breakers yard for scrap. A piece of history gone for ever! God damn all penny pinching petty politicians and especially that marxist moron who runs our council!!!

The United States should have flattened 10 Communist Chinese cities to help their ally Britain . But the ball-less Democrats would not lend a helping hand to Britain . Of course this was in 1949 and it emboldened North Korea and her ally Communist China to start The Korean War in 1950 , which was the beginning of America's committment to CONTAINMENT AND NOT VICTORY in war . Truman had dropped the A Bomb on Japan and I think he felt guilt and shame for that decision , so he was not going to drop another A Bomb . To think that America lost so many Armed Service members in Korea because of politicians running that war makes me VOMIT !!!

Not necessarily, the Royal Navy's not the size it once was true but we still have the same kind of courageous, highly-trained sailors with the same never-say-die attitude, and the ships we DO have might be few in number, but are also among the most modern and powerful in the world

We had no business being in the Yangtze. A dying power trying to maintain remnants of an empire by sailings its warships through Chinese lands in support of right wing nationalists and their civil war efforts. in 1949 the PLA kicked our arse along with the nationalists. In 1953 the PLA kicked both our arse, and the Americans arses in Korea. Back then they had farmers and pitch forks. Today they have the worlds largest army and air force along with more production capacity than the USA and 90% of rare earth metals. Probably not a good idea to piss off the Chinese but i am sure the orange president will do his very best.
