Patuone, a wonderful character in NZ history is buried in the cemetery on the side of Mt Hobson, if age appropraite get your students to research him then go visit his grave..... makes all this real.

Will do the coastal historical walk, go to the cemetery - to check out Patuone and others, climb North Head and visit the museum. Thanks for the tip! I am often confounded why significant historical places, like Patuone's grave, are not more widely known! Your channel here is wonderful for all Kiwi's to learn and get inspired about our history.

Kaye, you are doing a great job as a teacher, your pupils are lucky. Captain Wynard is right next to Patuone's grave, he was a dominant figure in Auckland's early history and a number of things are named after him (e.g. Wynard Quarter, he died in 1871) I think we will see NZ history take on a greater significance going forward, but todate many historical sites are completely unmarked and unacknowledged.

Kia ora Kiwi Codger. I am interested to find as much history about the North Shore (pre-migration) - namely Glenfield and the surrounding suburbs. Is there any historical kōrero/videos/books I can go to to help start our learning journey for my school? NZ History.

Not sure if you mean pre-migration or pre-colonisation. If pre- migration then I have no idea, if pre-colonisation then you may have a chance at the research section of the Maukau Library or the Main Auckland Library. There were a number of Pa along the Northshore that probably had some battles that were recorded.

Maoridom as we know it today is a modern concept. Back in the day it was tribal based,. In WW2 the Maori Battalions had to be carefully constructed with certain tribes that could get along who had minimal utu towards each other. Even today, if you scratch the surface of 'Maoridom' it is still very tribal based. Ironically it has been pakeha that have forced tribes to become more united and this has brought Maoridom into existence.

My ancestor was a famous Scottish Chief and English Earl, the Earl of Lindsay (they lived right on the Border which explains this). There is an old family story that many years ago, during the 19th Century, a famous Maori chief was their house guest, and about nine months after he left, Her Ladyship gave birth to a brown baby! The Earl claimed that the child was indeed his own, and that it was a throwback to a Roman ancestor, but that's a strange coincidence (nudge, wink!) That baby grew up to be my Ancestor, my mother's mother's Ancestor. In 1973, my parents moved to Rotorua, and about a year later, I was born. Mum and Dad were formerly missionaries among the Australian Aborigines, and the Aboriginal women loved my Mum. They said that she had their Spirit, moreso than the Spirit of the White Man. When they moved to New Zealand, they preferred to be with the Maori than with other White People, and my Mum, especially, was often mistaken for being a Maori woman. She would have Maori women walk up to her in the street and begin speaking Maori to her. She had black hair, green eyes and olive-brown skin, although she was of English and Scottish ancestry, so she looked like she might have been a dark haired "Whaka Blonde"! But more than that, she had the ways of a Maori woman, she just fitted right in with them! She was especially friendly with an old Nga Puhi woman called Hannah Veale, who lived on Clayton Road. Mrs Veale didn't have many friends, because she was a Nga Puhi and lived in Rotorua, but she was friends with my Mum. I remember Mrs Veale being a very hard lady, but she had a good heart, she was tough but fair, and in my dealings with the Nga Puhi over the years, this is how I have found them to be. I love Te Arawa as well, and even became friends with Hiko i te Rangi Hohepa, when I was younger, and his sister Mihi, but it is curious how both I and my Mum were able to connect so readily with the Maori people, even with the Nga Puhi, who are not known for their love of the Pakeha. Incidentally, if I ever meet any Nga Puhi people, I tell them this story, about the Maori Chief (Hongi Hika) who stayed with my Ancestor, and how his wife had a brown baby after they left, and they just laugh! When I ask them if Hongi was known to do this to other Chief's wives, they just keep laughing, and I think I have my answer, right there...
@kiwicodger
@kiwicodger 3 жыл бұрын
What a great story to have in the family. The odds of it being true are probably slim. There were many Maori who went to England at the beginning of the 19th century, the Maori chief could have been one of many, but stay with Hongi, we was the top dog. Certainly the odds of them being Ngāpuhi would have been high. Don;t forget, things were very strick and regulated back then, the chance to bang your host's wife would have required pretty bizarre circumstances. Loved the story though, thanks for sharing.

@@kiwicodger To this day, sometimes brown babies are born in the family, even when there has been absolutely no infidelity! One of my first cousins, for example, is so dark, he'd pass for a Maori, but his Mum is a strict Catholic and a very sweet lady who wouldn't dream of cheating on her husband, and both she and her husband are White. So, "Pesky Romans!" :) It could all just be a coincidence, though, nobody will ever know for sure. However, even Queen Victoria was, apparently, quite the wild woman, behind closed doors, and nobody ever knew about it until her diaries and letters were published, just a few decades ago! As well as this, the Lindsays (aka Crawfords) were wealthy and influential people about the Port of Whitby, which would have put them into contact with a certain James Cook and his entourage, back in the day. It would be interesting to go and research these connections, but there might be problems there as well, in that the British Blue Bloods get all strange when you go looking in closets for the Family Skeletons!

After two hundred years bad feelings still lie just below the surface. He didn't lose his mana after the attack on Mokia Is, it was close to the pinnacle of his mana. It was really when things started to go bad for him in the Bay of Islands when he got embroiled in a civil war with those in Whangaroa Harbour that life and his mana took a turn for the worse. He was shot through the chest, survived a year before succumbing to the wound. He still died a much feared leader of the area, you crossed him at your own peril.

Hika and Manukau were colonial toerags who had no Aboriginal links to Aokealoa whatsoever and whose ancestors were integrated (mixed) and indoctrinated slaves imported from the Tuamotu archipelago around 1502.AD. an area colonized by the European's since 1200.AD that later went under the Vatican's 1452 right of discovery proclamation which is now deemed illegal under International Law, I mean how do you discover a country, continent or island that had already been settled by Pacific Islanders 1000's of years before? In 1817 Aokealoa Aboriginal descendants and true Sovereign First Nation Nga Iwi Māui rejected the baalangi invaders proposed civil government, religious order and foreign sovereignty, this didn't sit well with the colonial invaders so they devised a plan to exterminate Iwi Māui using the young toerags Hika and Manukau hence the trip to England to seek muskets and create the missionaries Rarotongan revised te reo maori whilst they were there as kendall was fluent in the cook island dialect. Now the colonial invaders enemy were Iwi Māui who had very little if any muskets among them so to say it was a war is down right Ludicrous. So we can see clearly now that the voyage to England was a premeditated plan to commit mass genocide of over 23.000 Iwi Māui including Mori Ori who were basically armed with sticks and stones and probably 6 muskets if that.
