My family and I went on holiday in that area quite a few years ago, and I remember thinking to myself that Honister Pass had to be the most beautiful stretch of road I've ever seen in this country. Still looks good after all this time :)

Excellent video - I recently took my kids there and stayed at Leathes head hotel and we did the pass in our 1974 VW camper - we stopped at the slate mine as I didn't have the nerve to take the van down the other side so I really wanted to see it so thanks for the video. I will have to do it on my bike for sure.

Beautiful ride that! I did the pass on my Bonnie, couple of years ago, in the opposite direction, with the "Boss" on pillion! If you finish up at Keswick, there's a great chippy in the town! Cheers, ride safe.

You have been lucky with the weather - no better part of the country when it is like that. You are right about the steepness too - I went up those passes on a 1200RT and stopped nr the roman hill fort remains on the Hardknott pass to take a photo - put the bike in first gear and had the devils own job dismounting gracefully!! Keep em coming. Steve

Never get tired of the lake district, I have been walking in these hills for the past forty years, I wish I had been riding a motorcycle all those years but alas I have not, It would be nice too ride over the pass and down the Eskdale Valley past the railway station at Boot where " Ole Ratty " runs down the valley and out to the sea. Keep em coming M F, Regards, Colin.

Enjoyable vid, love the lake district. Shame you didn't get chance to stop at the slate mine at the top. The place was reopened by Mark Weir and turned into a tourist attraction with restaurant and activity centre. Sadly in 2011 Mark lost his life piloting his helicopter away from the mine when it crashed after a few hundred metres in bad weather. The place is still run by his family today and well worth a visit.

I'm about to finish my direct access and considering either a BMW 1000rr (a bit OTT), a BMW Nine T (OTT for other reasons) or a Ducati Monster 821. What do you think will be best? To be clear on usage, mostly only 40 miles a week, although I'd like to be able to tour and join a few mates on trips to europe. Love the channel, you've got another +1 here.
@jacktyler52419 жыл бұрын
+Jack Tyler I should probably say main frequency of riding will be Shepherds Bush to Liverpool Street. Everything else will be west of the M25 (Shepherds Bush to Guildford, Camberley, Reading). This will be once a month for each location.

what's the gradient on this 20%??
@TheMissendenFlyer5 жыл бұрын

@paulm24674 жыл бұрын
25% maximum both ways, the steepest part in this direction is at the bottom, in the opposite direction it's at the top near the slate mine ( where he said that is unbelievably steep ), It's not the steepest that's Hardknott at 33%. Honister is particularly dangerous for cyclists because of that little bridge, if your brakes fail that's what you can't get round.

Me and my mate did this about 3 weeks ago. He was on a Triumph Rocket 3 Classic 2.3 litre weighing 800lb + - just let that sink in...
@TheMissendenFlyer7 жыл бұрын
Those bikes are nuts aren't they - did he do Hardknott on it??
@allaboutkalergi50127 жыл бұрын
Yes he did TMF, and when we got near the end the pass was blocked by a caravanette which had got itself wedged alongside a horsebox. So we had to retrace the route the opposite way. My mate nearly misjudged the steepest badly cambered turn and nearly stalled the bike as it started sliding backwards towards the edge of the road and a sheer drop, but he got it together, slipped the clutch and somehow got back control. Talk about snatching it from the jaws of death... It was epic.

Sounds nasty!

You know what they say - “That which does not kill us, makes us stronger.” But TBH I think he'll leave the Rocket III behind next time we tackle a mountain pass and bring his Hinckley 790cc Bonnie instead.

Haha love your commentary, we did that ride 3 weeks ago uphill compared to your down hill in the pass, a bank holiday Sunday, red hot and busy as anything , 15 bikers in the group, car drivers who couldn't manage hill starts, traffic all over the place and of course the dreaded cyclists, not recommended on a bank holiday lol

Did you ride Hardknott & Wrynose Passes over to Eskdale?Although I may stand corrected I always though that they where the steepest surfaced roads in the U.K? You can't beat the Lakes, go mid week though!There are a few others to try too but I'll let you find them on a map as I'm not broadcasting there locations! D2R go and find these roads, it's all part of the adventure, don't rely on idiots like Jeremy Clarkshoes who has basically turned excellent roads into death traps by blerting his fat Yorks gob to all and sundry, last week up at Applecross my Dad and I where nearly wiped out by a mad woman in a Maserati going flat out.
