I have been away from Hawaii for over 20 years and we just started going back on vacations. Susan came up with a few very good ideas. One suggestion was to tell people the location of the place you are eating at in proximity to where it is to Waikiki because that is where most tourist will be staying. Fukuya is my favorite okazuya and I remember getting food from there with my family since I was a kid. You guys picked a lot of the things I like, but I don't know where you got your information because some of things you said were inaccurate. "Okazu" means the Japanese food items that accompany rice like in bentō, which is what the plantation workers took to the fields from home. They did not buy it from a store. Later those dishes were sold in "town" and so "okazuya" shops sold okazu and rice in musubi or sushi (inari or maki). Although okazuya today may have added dishes like poke or chow fun, it is still really a place to get Japanese food for lunch. That's why most things are sold out by 2 p.m. The dishes are mostly from the western side of Japan like Hiroshima, Yamaguchi, or Fukuoka because thatʻs where the Japanese plantation workers like my grandparents were from. Nishime is definitely a traditional Japanese dish, but it may not be called that in the eastern Tokyo area. I know "hekka" isn't Standard Japanese. I lived in Tokyo for five years, and people would sometimes laugh at Japanese words I used because they are the Hiroshima dialect, which is common among Hawaiʻiʻs Japanese immigrants. People I know from Hiroshima understand exactly what I'm talking about. Felix may not be interested in the history lesson, but if you want to describe and explain the food and kind of local eatery you are at to people outside of Hawaiʻi, or even for locals who may not know, itʻs a good idea to do your research and get your facts clearly stated before you record. An interesting book on the history of food in Hawai'i is Arnold Hiura's "Kaukau: Cuisine and Culture in the Hawaiian Islands." bookshawaii.net/products/kau-kau In general, Amanda does a good job trying to explain what the food is and give some background for non-local people, and her pronunciation of Japanese words is usually quite good -- except this time, you both use the typical American pronunciation of "okazuya" with the stress on the next-to-last syllable. In Japanese it's not "okaZUya" -- Just say "okazu" and add "ya." (I wonder how Felix's Vietnamese pronunciation is? THAT'S a hard language for English -speakers! )

Yes, it used to be more purple. I like the cinnamon raisin roll, banana bread and bread pudding. I used to like the haupia malasada-donut but don't know if it's still the same. I haven't seen it recently, but there used to be a flat log pastry stuffed with a brownish filling that was delicious.

Mahalo nui loa e Amanda and Felix! My 'ohana, originally from Japan, is also 5 generations in Hawai'i/mainland. Unfortunately because of historic anti-Asian sentiment (with an uptick during the pandemic - Atlanta shootings just 1 example), the Japanese/American incarceration during WWII and wanting to "get along to get ahead," a lot of culture has been lost. Mahalo for pointing out the historic nature of okazuyas - time capsule of what people were eating late 1800's, early 1900's. Enjoying your videos and taking notes for a future trip home when I look forward to visiting all these ono local eating places.

you guys should try out kailua assaggio's! its an italian restaurant located in kailua on uluniu st. it's also my uncle's restaurant & he has about 6 locations on this island so you guys should check it out sometime (:
