Honore' de Balzac, an adventure for sure. The will and power, "The will consumes power and destroys us." Capital moves upward and flows downward. The concern of money, marriage. What has changed? He was an incredible writer of realism. Thank you for this documentary.

Dear editor of this docu. Please spare the poor viewers, us, from Dr Michele Hannoosh. It is not possible to concentrate on the content of what she wants to say because of her very annoying pitch of voice and the posh, arrogant usage of English language. We understand that she has a degree in literature but let"s just stick to the genre of a docu and not pretend to give a lecture to academic students. Thank you.

A totally absorbing and entertaining portrayal of one of the world’s undeniable literary geniuses. Still, he was for the most part it seems, miserable. And so while eliciting a deep regard for Balzac’s untenable intellect and literary contributions to the world, this documentary also makes me glad to just be myself, unencumbered by genius and ambition. As musician Tiny Tim sang, “Aren’t You Glad To Be You?!” Indeed, I am, thou great philosopher, Mr. Tim, indeed I am! 😄
@AuthorDocumentaries3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! The life of an artist takes sacrifice. Balzac was intense! I'm an artist, but I try not to brood for too long lol. Tim is a wise sage

Interesting, but ruined for me by the narrator's insistence on calling Honore de Balzac by the rather less dignified Honore de Ball zack. The "a" is supposed to be short, a in "hat"!!! He tried to get the pronunciation right in other names, so why not this one? I had to switch off. I will content myself with a French copy of Mr Ballsack's "Contes Drolatiques", which I originally encountered in English translation.

So disturbing hearing the teller deforming his name every 2 minutes.. It's not fcking Ball-zeck, it's BAL-ZAC ...

The poor presenter of this documentary! Anyone who has a smattering of French language cannot fail to constantly flinch at his pronunciation. Did the presenter accept this commission out of desperation? Was he unaware of his terrible accent? Apart from that, the documentary is good, well compiled and illustrated and draws on well informed (and more linguistically capable) experts in the field particularly Graham Robb who has written a weighty biography of Balzac. So all in all, I am thankful to have discovered this (though still flinching at the end!)

Good doc. One observation: Ewelina Hańska was not Ukrainian. She was Polish. As was her husband Wacław Hański. In those times Poland extended to some Ukrainian terrains. Nevertheless in those times Poland was under partitions. Hański's estate was in the region occupied by Russia. So - some of Ukrainian territory had been taken by Poles, which - in its turn was taken by Russians. Complicated. I know.
