My father is a Vietnam War vet buried in Gettysburg, PA. I live in NC. Three years ago, I visited for the first time since my mother passed, 10 years ago. Dad’s grave looked horrible! My god-daughter had moved to Gettysburg, so I would be visiting more often. When my husband and I returned about a year and a half later, we brought the garden tote so we could clean Dad’s grave. To my surprise, someone had already come along and done it. He even had a new flag and the little vase for flowers was cleaned out. I just came across this video. I’m sure you didn’t personally clean my father’s grave, but as a family member of a veteran who received a similar cleaning, I want to say a huge thank you! This truly means more than you will ever know. ❤

@@LifeRaw_co with these ground level bronze grave markers, you don't know the location of the edges of the base stone until you expose it. Also, you don't know if the base stone is made out of concrete, marble, or granite until you expose the base stone. In cemeteries such as the larger newer for-profit perpetual care type, grounds crews do use mechanical edgers to cut around the edges of the base stones. As volunteers of varying skills with mechanical edgers, and the unknowns beneath the encroaching sod, to make sure we do no harm is why I recommend using a hand tool as shown in this video. We also avoid using any powered tools because there's just too much risk of doing irreparable harm.

He was very precise about locations. Scouting alone on the morning of June 13, 1916 Sgt. McBride he writes, climbed up a railway berm that looked onto the the infamous Hill 60 at Ypres, Belgium. There, Canadian trenches crossed in front of the hill held by the Germans. And then he records the start of a barrage of Minenwerfers, garbage can sized German mines shot up in the air to come down at a steep angle. Slow enough for Sgt McBride to watch each one fall. One came down in a trench where in the tight space it killed a dozen+ Canadian soldiers of the 7th Battalion British Columbia Regiment. One of whom was my great uncle James. James now rests a mile north with his comrades in Railway Dugouts Commonwealth War Cemetery at VI-D-17. A brave American volunteer risking all, saw it happen, and recorded it for my family.

It really is a small world and we are DNA related to more people than we can ever imagine. I've spent a lot of time and effort building my family tree during the past 4.5 years, so I now know the surnames of my ancestors. I can walk into most any old cemetery in Florida and recognize one of those surnames on headstones. Almost every time I research that person, I recognize one of their grandfathers as also being one of my grandfathers. I recently found a Medal of Honor recipient in Cocoa, FL with a headstone not befitting such a hero. I recognized his last name of Bennett. Sure enough, he turned out to be my 4th Cousin 3x Removed. I would have never made the connection had I not built my family tree. I've experienced such joy by discovering my roots, so I try to inspire others to experience that joy as well.

We recently went to Michigan and I brought D2 with me as well as a small makeshift cleaning kit to clean my dad's headstone but I got sick the night before before and didn't make it He was also a veteran of both the army and air force Thank you for showing the proper way to clean the bronze markers I still would have liked to have gone but feel less sad knowing that it would have taken more than d2 I gave the D2 I brought with me to a friend who's daughter passed from cystic fibrosis as well as the kit and instructions how to use it

Trae, you are awesome to be taking care of veteran's headstones. Thank you so much! My dad is a WWII army veteran and he has the bronze marker, joint with my mom's. They've been gone now nearly 30 years and I've never used anything but water to clean it. But it is tarnished and I do plan on shining it, then putting a clear glaze. You inspired me to buy some D/2 Biological Solution. Not cheap but it sure does a great job.

D/2 is really good stuff. I've visited some of the headstones I cleaned more than a year ago and they are still perfectly clean.

What a kind & respectful act for you to clean a strangers grave marker. Also to teach others how to do it. I try to keep my loved ones grave markers clean but never knew how to clean the cement so I was glad to Watch how you cleaned it. Again, Thank You.!

Thank you for these videos. I live about 350 miles from where my family, including my father who served in Vietnam, is buried. My next visit home, my husband and I are planning to go clean Daddy's marker, as well as my other family buried there. I've let it go too long.

You gave great care and attention to this grave marker. You are a good man, his family, if alive would be truly proud. If only we had such respect for our veterans in the UK.

I've been doing this for so many years I've lost track of how long I've been doing it lol I've probably been to over half dozen cemeteries,clean family's places up put flowers 💐 on there sites, water othe people's flowers 💐 in the cemeteries with 3 50ft hoses. It's really satisfying to do this for people, ive even recently fixed someone's concrete urn on there family's grave...

Thank you for doing this. It is important. I hail from England. I have lived in the United States for 50 years now. I always visit the grave sites of loved ones when I visit the UK. And tidy up graves as needed. Pleased to say, this has inspired other British relatives to do likewise..

Hello Honor Your DNA, I appreciate your reply. I occasionally drive past a large cemetery in London, Ontario and can see the veterans' section. I always say a silent thank you to all those interred there. We all owe our service personnel so much. In Canada, we have Remembrance Day on November 11 and services are held at cenotaphs throughout the country. Sadly, people return to their daily lives the following day and most forget! When I see the war cemeteries at Normandy and the thousands of stones at the graves of Americans, Canadians and British military personnel, I realize that all veterans, alive and deceased, need to be honoured and remembered YEAR ROUND, not just one day a year. I know that your efforts in cleaning memorials is appreciated by so many. Thank you. Regards, Bob in Ontario, Canada

@HonorYourDna To clean the bronze there is a cleaner known as Bar Keeper's Friend, which will clean the bronze without scratching it. You can find it in grocery store isle next to comet and Ajax. It cleans bronze, copper, and many metals.

Somebody had to do something about neglected and forgotten veteran graves. God gave me the unique skills and experiences to recognize the problem and to lead the effort to turn this around. I hope you will join us. Register as a Volunteer at VeteranGraves.com and watch the introduction video.

It's truly a great feeling to know there are people like you in the world who care deeply enough to honor your dad with a respectable grave marker. Neglected veteran headstones doesn't mean people don't care, they just don't know. That's why I'm so confident we're going to get all the veteran headstones cleaned once word gets around.

Is it safe to add Vinegar and salt, to restore the original color? Thanks!
@theyfaceeast3 жыл бұрын
@@sheilahtaylor3005 I live on saltwater and know that salt corrodes metal, so I would never apply salt to a metal grave marker. I think restoring a bronze veteran grave marker is beyond the scope of what a Volunteer should take upon themselves to do. I would just wash and rinse with clean water. Eventually, I plan to produce a video about how to restore a bronze grave marker, but I don't know when that might happen.
@sheilahtaylor30053 жыл бұрын
@@theyfaceeast thank you DO much, I was nervous about using the salt. I will WAIT for your video, however long it takes. I trust you. My Dad was a ww ll vet. Thanks

My father (WWII vet, Captain USAF, flew P51 fighter escort out of Bodney UK) has a bronze headstone exactly like the one in your vid. In the past we have used just water and a soft bristle brush on the bronze but nothing on the surrounding concrete border. Next time I visit I might try your cleaning process.
