@@timboyer8783 It be just packets marked as B, Cu, N, Zn, Mo, Fe, etc. and work with miligrams. You potentially get 10x cheaper customisable to strain and stages solution minimising lost of water and materials. But you need to be at least a bit of chemist dto make it work at full potential have some tools and reagents to tests or use side lab. Organic is suboptimal.

I would love to see future videos on making your own hydroponic nutrients. I've been growning with hydroponics for 15 years and I've discovered there are certain plants that will not fruit if you don't have the nutrients formula precisely dialed in. You can find in the scientific literature the exact ratios of nutrients, but you'll never see them on the shelf as almost all flower nutrients are designed for a very specific cash crop.

Takes a lot of time to study up on all the different nutrient products that are available. Be great to get to a test chart if one hasn't already been done to make comparisons. A table with data collected on the results of using various nutrients by manufacturer. I suppose water is a big factor too. Also, comparisons between dry nutrients and liquid nutrients. In addition, I am just now discovering the biostimulant market for hydroponics. Here in Japan a company I work with developed a bistimulant that causes roots to grow 20-30 percent larger resulting in the roots being able to pull in more nutrients for increased growth. A biostimulant linked to an optimal nutrient would be phenomenal growth.

An optimal nutrient profile would have to include the environment because environment plays a major role in nutrient uptake. Fwiw, uptake changes with temperature, light intensity and CO2 as well as growth stage. The type of growing method makes a big difference and if that wasnt enough, the daytime and night time elemental uptake is completely different.

it's unlikely to work, keeping nutrients suspended in water so plants can absorb them is pretty advanced chemistry, i think (much easier when using soil). For a fact, i tried to use organic liquid fertilizer for hydroponics (growing in perlite), it never worked.

Hey Hooch, You've been a true saviour mate!! I've had a large urban garden for a few years and now I've been wanting to get into hydroponics. Your video's have been a true miracle. Your extensive knowledge is impressive to say the least. Enough with the gushing, on with the question!!..lol My plan is to start a quad tube grow tower, an NFT and Dutch Buckets. I will be picking up a large 1000L reservoir that I plan to use to feed nutrient to all systems through a feed reservoirs with float valves. I'll be growing a large variety of Veggies in all the systems. Is there one general nutrient mix for all feedings (leafy greens and fruiting) or should I be mixing for specific plant types (requiring me to change the setup slightly) and use smaller fee reservoirs with different nutrient mixes more tailored to greens and fruiting types??? A little help for you. The metric system is very logic. 1litre of water weighs 1kg. Water freezes at 0 degree Celsius and boil at 100 degree.

Hydrobuddy is great for making nutrients from scratch, although I'm sure that you would make one more entertaining video with less maths and more beer. I also rate the blog archive on hydrobuddy which is a treasure trove of great information for anyway looking to do a deep dive. After going down the rabbit hole, I am now supplementing my Campbell's fertilisers with EDTA (chelate to keep metals in solution), specific trace elements that are low in cambells, a pH buffer to combat pH increases (Potassium carbonate), I also use potassium silicate foliar spray to get silicon to the plants in the most cost effective way. My interest in hydro is how to grow plants as fast as possible so all the little bits that give an edge are great to me.

To maximise gorwth you need to maximise all the variables, the most critical one being environment. If you have the environment nailled down then you can look at the rest. My recommendation is to choose a growing method that gives you total control over all of the impotnat variables. Ideally, you want one that provides realtime feedback from the plants, so they can tell you exactly what they want.

As a commercial grower it would pay you to make it yourself. As a horticultural business sourcing the chemicals should be relatively easy. Private individuals typically have to deal with a lot of red tape when it comes to oxidizers.

I was using the diamond spec t in my nft system with good results but recently switched to diamond blue and nitro cal same ratio but the results are much better, I'm growing mostly winter crop of salads, cabbage,broccoli,Chinese cabbage and kale. Before had signs of nitrogen deficiency but now everything is green as can be.

Thank you for the fantastic information! What is your opinion on adding magnesium Sulphate to the nutrient solution? I ordered some powdered hydroponics nutrients and it came with Magnesium Suplhate, and instructed to add it to the solution at a ratio 50% of the fertilizer and calcium nitrate. Apparently Magnesium Suplhate is an additional nutrient but i didn't hear you mention it in this video - is it necessary?

Another great video. I am all new to this and todays project is to make the propagator & pucks! My local nutrient distributor does not stock the Special T and recommended the Dimond White as a alternative. The Dimond White has proportionally higher nitrogen. Do you think this would this be suitable? Any help appreciated. I just realised that the A/B solution I have used is thr "Grow" version from the brand Shogun. I don't understand why there are so many brands supplying "Grow" & "Bloom". Is there a problem just using the Grow solution, or do I need to empty all my buckets to then top up and recalibrate with a Bloom solution? Please help.

You can create crop specific nutrient formulations from one set of agricultural chemicals. Some countries restrict the sale of some chemicals (typically oxidizers) so YMMV depending on where you live. The main chems, which typically come in 25kg sacks are: mono potassium phosphate (MKP), potassium nitrate, calcium nitrate, magnesium sulphate, potassium sulphate. Ammonium sulphate and magnesium nitrate can also be quite useful. Most folks use a micro mix such as STEM etc but the purists prefer to use individual micro`s (Fe, B, Zn Mn,Mo,,Cu). If you are a small scale grower you may be better off using a 2 part dry nutrient vs making your own from scratch. The price of chemicals has increased massively and will likely keep going up which should be taken into account. Its important to note that you should always use distilled or reverse osmosis water for your stock solutions to ensure they are accurate.

Hello! Good videos! I have a question. Why my calcium participate when im mixing the reservoir? I know when air bubbleing takes out co2 from water so it raise ph, but every hydroponics need some kind of airstone in the reservoir, doesnt matter its a dwc or nft system. So my question is what the best practice when mixing nutrients? I wait 1 day with tap water to get stagnated, and i air bubbled it too. Than ph go up 8.0 . Than i add a bit of nitric acid 60%, to get ph down to 6.5. Than i add a solution A (npk 6,14,30+epsom salt) stock solution, than waiting for another day and bubbleing it. Than next day i add the calcium nitrate stock solution B, than add more nitric acid to make ph 6.0. Than suddenly ph starts to rise again and calcium participate, and make cloudy water. The water was on room temperature all the time, ec went up after mixing all nutes to 900ppm (what is good), so dont know what im doing wrong pls help. How to avoid this participated clody water. Thanks.

I use Masterblend, calcium nitrate, and Epsom salt in a 2,2,1 ratio. The Masterblend is solution A, and the calcium nitrate and Epsom Salt is solution B.

Just wondering where you source campbells diamond Special T. I tried norco and drew a blank. There is a comprehensive list of ingredients in one of the ebooks I have but it means sourcing things like Mo trioxide that costs a small electric vehicle.

Nutrient companies like to use oxide equivalents in the guaranteed analysis, such as CaO, MgO, K2O, P2O5 etc. in place of elemental Ca, Mg, K and P. If you use sodium molybdate, you`d need 7g per 1000L of diamond T nutrient solution @ 1g/L.

how do you store your part-A concentrates? I use masterblend 4-18-38, stuff would start growing, mold or bacteria, when left in the dark at room temp. Think some people recommend putting Sodium Benzoate to prevent growth, but now I put mine in the fridge. The part-B concentrate can be left at room temp nothing grows in it.

Doing a bit of excel, in order to make 1 Liter of "watering water" at a time of half strength solution (I want to grow coriander in pretty small containers, I mixed 12.5g of A and B into 500mL bottles. It means I need 20mL of these base solutions to make 1L of half strength watering water. I'll get 25L of watering water for leafy greens from these 12.5g of inputs in these 500mL bottles. For A, i used Kristalon from Yara. For B, I used Calcinit from Yara. I'm in Bucharest. I figured that it would be a pain to measure less than 20mL at a time from these base solutions. I ended up with an EC of c.1.5

Hydro fertilizers usually contain everything... so not just N, P, K but also Ca, Mg, S and metals like Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, B, Mo (mostly in chelated form). Normal fertilizers are mostly NPK (sometimes metals or Mg/S) because you usually don't need to worry about Ca, Mg, S and metals in dirt growing.

A couple months or longer it shouldn't dissipate as long as its in a light proof container or kept in dark. I mix mine in 2x two hundred liter blue plastic drums and it takes about 8 to 10 weeks till i have to make up more part a and b.

Wouldn’t the mixed solution have a different specific gravity than fresh water? That would then throw out the concentration if you’re basing it of mL instead of calculating by weight would it not? Or am I simply overthinking it?

You are overthinking it:) If you make the stock solution accurately you will know the weight of chemical vs volume, ie, grams per ml. You need to consider the solubility of the chemical and the temperature the stock solution will be stored at. The more concentrated the stock the less room you`ll have for downward temperature swing. Most companies that make dry nutrients will give you the recomended maximum concentration, typically 100g -150g per litre, the 250g per litre shown in the video is at the very top end but Oz is a warm place. To ensure the elemental accuracy of the stock solution you should use with distilled or at least reverse osmosis water. Using tap water will likely result in precipitation and/or elemental changes due to chemical reaction. If you contaminate a stock solution using water with an unknown elemental content, you wont have an elementally accurate stock solution.

@@atomizer2665 Most importantly, you have to convert P and K % content to real one if the P and K content is listed as P2O5 and K2O which mostly is. They still use the outdated description which is misleading. P2O5 to P = multiply P2O5% by 0.44 and K2O to K is multiply by 0.83. So if the label says NPK 10-10-10 it's actually 10-4.4-8.3 real P and K weight. The P2O5 and K2O isn't even in the fertilizer, that's how stupid it is...

The biggest hurdle to automation for me on the hobby scale has been nutrient balance. There's more to it than just PH and EC. But how much of each based on the plants life cycle. There's a whole slew of algorithms to work with regarding a sliding scale. But tuning one without lab that has a gas chromo? Good luck.

I'm confused! He says the manufacturer of his nutrient recommends adding 1 gram nutruent per 1 litre of water, so I would have thought that equates to 20 grams per 20 litres of water, but he adds 5kg of nutrient into 20 litres water. What am I missing?

Great man. I don't bother with that shit at home. My reservoir is 1000 litres and I chuck in 500g of Diamond Blue or Special T depending on my mood and 500g of Calcium Nitrate. Recirculate it for 1.5 hours at mixing and an hour every morning before watering commences. That works fine. Not enough concentration of anything for precipitation. For a laugh I thought I'd tell you what we do at work. 17 hectares of blueberries, raspberries and strawberries. All have different mixtures depending on whether fruiting or no, variety etc and all are going at the same time somewhere. Current non fruiting mixture for raspberries (and yes calcium nitrate is always A): A tank (1000 litres): Calcium Nitrate 175 kgs Calcium Thiosulphate 20 Litres Potassium Nitrate 12.5 kgs DTPA Iron 2.5 kgs Mg 1.0 kgs B tank (1000 litres): Magnesium Sulphate 100 kgs Potassium Nitrate 12.5 kgs Magnesium Nitrate 25 kgs MKP 25 kgs Boron 94g Mn 600g Zn 600g Cu 36g Moly 24g And we use Phos Acid (down) and Potassium Hydroxide (up) to adjust pH. We run about 3-6 litres of each solution per 1000 litres of water depending on EC requirements as the plants change. That solution lasts about 1-3 days. I hope I'm not being a dick, my only point here is that the systems you show are infinitely scalable under the right conditions, and that I do perfectly fine with my dinky setup at home (and I don't have to pay the fert bill at work). The highest quality and cheapest fertilizer is a fertilizer obtained by mixing chemicals purchased from a wholesale supplier of chemicals. Therefore, I will hope that the author of this channel will not be like housewives who buy bags with the inscription "fertilizer A" and "fertilizer B" in a garden store and dissolve them according to the instructions on the label. I hope to see the composition in generally accepted chemical names and concentrations in grams per liter of base solution.

Making nutrients from scratch isnt right for everyone. For one, wholesale suppliers of chemicals may not be legally allowed to sell certain chemicals to private individuals. The other issue is what is available in one country may not be available in another, for example, if the formulation calls for Zinc at 13% and they only have access to Zinc at 9%, the weight needed will be different, so it will involve more education than just a basic how to. Folks will also need a scale accurate to at least 0.001 of a gram for the micro`s. If growing is your passion, making nutrients from scratch is the logical step but its not for everyone.

Also, no ultra-precise scales are required when volumes of about ten liters are being prepared. Ordinary electronic kitchen scales are enough. Adding powders to a canister of three bags is no more difficult than from one! But the bag with the inscription "diamond spect" I have no idea at all what it is and how it can be replaced in my particular locality! At the same time, potassium nitrate - all over the world will be called potassium nitrate and magnesium sulfate will also be magnesium sulfate. It is enough not to be an idiot not to make a mistake in these names.

@@ph08nyx I guess you didnt read the "from scratch" part, which means not a pre made 2 part dry nutrient like campbells. "From scratch" meaning using individual chemicals such as mono potassium phosphate (MKP) potassium nitrate (KNO3) etc along individual micro`s such as Fe-DTPA, boric acid, sodium molybdate etc. Good luck trying to weigh a fraction of a gram of anything accurately on a kitchen scale :) A 10L stock solution of Diamond special T (200x concentration) will involve a chemical weight of 0.564g so you will need an accuracy of 0.001g Fwiw, the elemental ppm of Campbell`s Diamond special T at 1g per litre equates to NO3: 82, P: 17, K: 267, Ca: 0, Mg:17, S: 42, Fe: 1.5, B: 0.28, Zn: 0.23, Mn: 0.75, Cu: 0.17, Mo: 0.11, cost to make this formulation (converted to Oz dollars) would be $3.66/kilo. A quick google suggests a single kilo could cost as much as $24, a 25kg bag will be cheaper per kg but still silly expensive when compared to the raw chemical cost. Garden stores will generally buy from chemical wholesalers, split into smaller weights and quadruple the price per kilo. Over the last few years, the cost of agri chemicals has increased by 50%-60% in some cases,, 25kg of calcium nitrate (yara calcinit) used to cost the equivalent of $33 AUD, now its $51.25.
