🙊 Perhaps it's different for track use, but I was always told that you need the oil temp to get to 100 Celsius in order to burn off the water which may condense in your engine. Probably doesn't matter if you're changing the oil a lot for the track though. The sound effects for the saw was a hoot!

You win Stan🏆 Excellent point, I suspect you're right. I should've said that 100C was on my 20-30 test drive loop. In traffic or on track, I would expect the temps to climb to ~110C/230F? And 100% agree on the frequent oil changes! Great comment!
@stantheman51634 ай бұрын
@@mostlyuselessgarage Thanks. I installed an oil temp gauge in my mostly stock '94 Miata and it sits at around 220-230F in normal town driving. It gets to 240F with spirited driving on the twisters and cools down pretty quickly when getting back to cruising.

As always, this is a great mixture of good information (well demonstrated) and entertainment. Shame about the vinyl wrap. You did a better job than I would have - I think I would have sanded and sprayed the bonnet/hood (mind you it would have probably still have be a ten footer!!). Nice editing (a part of YT videos that people don't appreciate) and sound effects too 😂.

In my opinion, you have to heat up vinyl with a hairdryer or heat gun in order to get it glassy everywhere. That's the secret. I tried to wrap a hardtop without heat. It was such a pain until I got the technique down. Here it is: Pull the vinyl up from the surface with one hand, keeping just enough pressure to hold it taught. Heat gun with the other hand, until you notice the tension on the vinyl dissipates just a little bit. Put the heat gun down, grab with both hands, lay down the vinyl as you stretch it tight. It will be glassed. Just squeegee over to make sure it is stuck on properly. You can glass a few feet of surface at once, with that technique. I used the 3m air release.
@mostlyuselessgarage4 ай бұрын
Awesome advice, thx! I'll def give 3M wrap a try next time, reports say it's DIY friendly (stretches well, low tack, heats good). If you can wrap a hardtop with it, it's gotta be good! Ppl say Vvivid is very hard to use for all the opposite reasons of 3M ... thick, super tacky, heats terrible. I didn't show it in the video but I used a heat gun for the front. Honestly dunno why Vvivid is marketed to DIYers.

An option is to check on your local classifieds ... hoods often come up for sale in my area for ~$100. In fact I have a spare hood hanging in my garage that I may wrap and install these vents into.

Wonder how rains effects this
@mostlyuselessgarage4 ай бұрын
Horribly 😅 I don't rain drive much but I think the 3-panel should be OK. Water would run down between the rad and front of engine, and when you're at speed it should run backward toward the windshield. I'm not gonna a test it out tho!

Do you have any concerns with moisture getting into the engine bay? Idk if you store the car outside or not.
@mostlyuselessgarage3 ай бұрын
I garage store my car and it only comes out in fair weather. But ya cutting holes in the hood would allow water into the engine bay if stored outdoors.
@helpmeboonmee3 ай бұрын
@@mostlyuselessgarage I see. I’ve wanted to do this to help with engine bay temps but I dont know if moisture in there is worse than a hot engine bay.
@mostlyuselessgarage3 ай бұрын
@helpmeboonmee hmm, if you have to park outside, maybe making a little cover for it would help. A piece of ABS going over all 3, foam seal surround, and bungy hooks? That or just throw a car cover over the whole thing. Water running down in front of your engine probably isn't a big deal, the only thing I wouldn't wanna get wet is the rad fan motor but that's pretty well sealed.
