I must agree with you. The reuse of parts never bothered me. I got used to them doing that early. But the smiley face and the file card made him out to be a bit of a goodie two shoes. And somehow that translated into the figure before I ever really read the file card. Later in life, he's grown on me. makes me wish I would have got him when I was a kid and gave him a chance. Preconceived notions aside, Top tier figure and character.

In the US Army, once you reach the rank of Master Sargent (E-8), you can be appointed the position of First Sargent. The reason behind this is based on the type of unit ie (Company or Battalion) levels and its command structure. The title First Sergeant is not guaranteed or handed out. It must be earned through one's military career. Also if a person leaves their unit through reassignment the title First Sergeant isn't transferred over to the new unit. Otherwise, this is a fantastic review of Duke! I love having a live version of him involved.

I wasn’t in the Army, but we had First Sergeants (aka First Shirts) in the Air Force. Assuming the Army arrangement is similar, I do not see a discrepancy. First Sergeant is not a rank, it’s a mostly honoured and specialised position with unique responsibilities available to those who have already achieved E-7, E-8 and E-9. I’ve been in units with First Sergeants who were both Master Sergeants (E-7) and Senior Master Sergeants (E-8). A First Sergeant might serve that role at one unit, and then PCS to another duty station where (s)he does not serve as First Sergeant.

Master Sergeants are usually on staff, in S/G/or J shops. The 1SG is in a good position, unless they’re a 1SG for a HQs….then, they’re pretty much the admin guy/gal.

Hi Bryan, another great review. Keep up the great work! About the Marvel Comics/G.I.Joe Universe issue you raised - in the Marvel G.I.Joe comic #94, J.Jonah Jameson made a 4-panels cameo. He asked for a copy of the Daily Bugle at a newsstand (where Stalker, Wade Collins, and Storm Shadow was using as a base because it was across from the Cobra Consulate), and the vendor told Jameson he "doesn't sell that rag".

Lovely video as always, I never realized Duke reused so many parts. Educational.I for one never had a problem with Duke, but I didn't get a figure of him till V3 came out.

Great review, duke was my favorite character growing up with gi joe, when I was a kid I only had duke v3, but now as a collector I have both versions of duke v1, finding a duke with the flag sticker is not easy or cheap, I even got me the duke v1 from China that had different arms, I didn't know there were different greens for dukes accessories, it's weird that dukes rank has always been a problem, you would think Hasbro would ask Larry hama the correct rank for characters before releasing them to stores, thanks again for reviewing this awesome figure again, and it was great to see duke again helping out in the review, no cobra snake could keep this joe down and out, I'm sure glad I got to meet Michael bell the voice of duke, he is a great guy to meet and talk to, he even told me I should go into voice acting he says I have a unique voice that should be heard, maybe one of these days I will give a try

By my teen ages and having learning more about the military, Duke got promoted into the officer ranks. He ended his career as a Brigadier General with Hawk being a 4-Star. Even as a First Sergeant it just felt weird for me to have him as enlisted while ordering around officers even up to Colonel. It just bugged me to no end so boom, General.

Duke was one of my first GI Joes, and always one of my favorites. As a kid, I didnt mind that he had similar equipment to Airborne & Stalker as in mind, there should be some uniformity of equipment in the army.

It makes sense that Duke is an acting 1SG. The G.I.Joe base was a small chaplain's school motor pool on Staten Island. It might draw less attention walking around to be just a MSG. E-8's are a somewhat rare sight, but 1SG are much more noticed by troops. Plus the role of 1SG is NCO support, besides training, and many of the Joes might not need that much of a mother.

I was ok-ish with Duke. His file card gave me the impression that the military was his life, nothing else really. I liked Hawk more and thought he should have been in the cartoon a lot more.

It is common in the army to have a master sergeant as an acting first sergeant so the first generation file card is accurate. So apparently he became the first sergeant by the second generation card. It is also not uncommon for first sergeants to again become a master sergeant if they step down from a company comment position if they are not promoted to sergeant major so that makes to other generation cards correct as well.

The rank master and First Sergeant in the army are equal, the diamond device is all that distinguishes them, Master Seargeants like Duke may hold the position. In the Air Force First Sergeant is a job held by either a Master Senior or Chief Master Sergeant.. once again the diamond device signifies the title, but the job can also be held by non First Shirts " my squadron had the position held by just such a man".

In the Army, the 1SG nickname is “Top”….”first shirt” is more of an Air Force nickname. MSG isn’t really a step-down from being a 1SG. MSGs have more of a technical focus on the mission at various echelons, while 1SG has more of a training/admin focus for the Soldiers in their formation. If you’re the 1SG for an HHC at Battalion, Brigade, etc you’re just another Joe in the formation. And Duke to me SCREAMS Officer. He carry’s himself like one and acts like one.

So, the main difference for 1st Sgt and Master Sgt is that the 1st Sgt is a job that comes with a pay grade, a Master is just a pay grade. There are plenty of E-7s and E-8s that will act as 1st Sgt, and wear the rank of a 1st Sgt during a tour and go back to it when moving to a different unit, while still existing in the S1 as a Master Sgt or E-7, while the S3 will refer to the as 1st. But the way the card shows it is a little confusing. And on a personal note as a former officer, it's made worse for me by the fact that GI Joe is obviously a lot bigger than a Company sized unit, and Duke should be a CSM instead of a 1st, considering he is the top enlisted man

Its interesting to note that the submachine gun that Stalker and Duke both have is based on the early version of the H&K MP5A3 with the straight waffle style magazine. This version was only seen a few times in media according to IMFDB.org the curved style magazine is much more commonly seen in media. Still it a pretty nice weapon, and one of my favorites in the vintage line.

Nice review as always but I think there is one thing wrong the boys at Hasbro and a lot of fans might not be aware of and it's an American military thing; I think the Flag Patch is meant to be on Duke left arm. Reason being with the Star field forward it represents the U.S. Army never retreating.

The flag sticker on the card art, and everywhere else is actually wrong. For it to be worn on the right sleeve, it should be facing the opposite direction. The stars should always be leading the way!

erdio21 Sometimes he does another review on the figures or vehicles that he reviewed in the earlier days of his channel. He has done it with the Skystriker and a few others. Not all preferences are created equal. I do like the comic book more than the cartoon, but to me Duke always was the leader, Scarlett was his chick, and while in real military, the brass are on the sidelines, to me he was the general and led in the field. That said, I loved to place him in comas on more than a few occasions lol.

I put the flag on his leg. The sticker was really large, and round for some reason. But we’ll never again see another “Duke” character or figure. Blonde hair, alpha male who is an all-around good guy? No way. Cancel culture will destroy him. Too bad, because we need heroes like Duke. I didn’t like that later comics tried to make him a jerk and give him a mysterious past. Just let him be a good guy and strong leader.
