From what I noticed in difference is that we are closer to the original that the other diaspora practices. Probably because Salvador da Bahia took far more Africans during the trades than anywhere else in the world.

@@highkeymelaniin9807 Yes, this is what I noticed too. Im Cuban, but I have a Brazilian friend who is from Bahia state. Candomble is part of the culture there, from what I have been told. It does appear to be closer to IFA in Africa. Its a beautiful system that I respect. 🙂

@@Shazzyhtown Im Dominican, Cuban and Brazilian on one side, and Gullah Geechee and indigenous on the other lol. I’ve been exposed to so many different versions , but I am initiated under candomblé. It wasn’t until I was between 7-10 that I realized there were big differences between my family. Especially visiting my cousins in SC. I was actually born on Myrtle Beach (citizenship). But yes… from meeting other people and knowing my family and syncing with catholic saints for some, and how important Christianity is to others, because you can’t have HooDoo without Christianity (even though people want to separate the two… they both must exist together) to be HooDoo, and the different languages. I speak português mostly. I’ve lived in LosAngeles for a long time though, and my godmother lives in Houston, but she referred me to an IFÁ family out here so… I’ve also been learning and seeing the differences in IFA haha. I love us everywhere though, and every language, and every culture.

I love being Gullah Geechee. I am the current stickman for The McIntosh County Shouters. It is due to my family that the world has documentation of the Gullah Geechee tradition of the ring shout after the late 19th early 20th century. My family started the group The McIntosh County Shouters in 1980 as a way to share the ring shout tradition to public audiences. My great-grandmother and her generation were the founding members of the group. My family has kept the ring shout alive in the U.S. for over 400 years in active practice. It was having this tradition in my family that lead me to learning about ATRs and lead me to Ocha. I am Omo Oya so I am constantly trying to put the pieces together of how ocha and Oya all come together for me spiritually with the ring shout.

Hoodoo belongs to Black Americans. It was born from those enslaved Africans brought to the Americas. It is a mixture of traditional African practices, Native American practices, with some European influences. In was born out of our need to continue our African practices in an unfamiliar land with unfamiliar people. It can be found wherever enslaved Africans in North America were found. The Gullah-Geechee are a subgroup of African Americans that have a distinct language, history, and culture. They even have a different genetic make up than most other Africans of the diaspora here in America. They can be found in the Gullah-Geechee corridor which stretches from Jacksonville, Florida to North Carolina. Many of our ancestors have come through this corridor because the main slave ports were in Charleston and Virginia.

This was really good thank you for sharing. Rootwork/Hoodoo is my spiritual practice. It came down to me through my Mother teaching what her grand-mother shared with her. Part of my family is Bahamian from Long Island. The other part from The South Georgia & Monticello FL. Now I don't agree with you have to be initiated in hoodoo. If it is passed down from your Elders in your family. Maybe if you are going to someone who isn't in your family. They might require certain rituals. Also this belief of initiation might be a regional thing. When I was growing up it was not called Hoodoo. It was called root work or conjure. And my mother & grandma used the bible to get things done. Their were folks name next to Psalms 37. If you needed protection you would say psalm 91 over your herbs you would carry. Or your mojo bag or gris-gris. My mother kept incense & candles burning all the times. She also kept a basket of fruit for the hungry spirits or ancestors. We don't eat the fruit it's for them. A lot of things come to me in my dreams as well. The ancestors come through that way as well. Peace & Bliss 🙏🏾💜

I am a Hoodoo and an Orisha devotee. Let's be clear THERE IS NO INITIATION TO HOODOO. Hoodoo is of the BLOOD. Unlike Ifa this is a form of ANCESTRAL MAGIC and the only INITIATION you have is to be BORN INTO THIS. What does this mean? Anyone trying to INITIATE you into Hoodoo is likely either trying to gatekeep it because of the culture vultures. People who are not of the blood (ANYONE NOT AFRICAN-AMERICAN AND THE DECENDENT OF THE ENSLAVED) can look at Hoodoo but simply do not have the ASÈ to allow Hoodoo to work for you. There are no dieties, there are ANCESTORS AND FOLK SPIRITS. Do not confuse the two.

Grateful for your acknowledgement of Hoodoo initiation ceremonies. So many practitioners speak down to the notion of initiatic transmission in Hoodoo-Aaron Davis, for example-but even a cursory glimpse at the work of Hurston (esp. _Men and Mules_) makes it clear that, before the current trend of fierce individualism that took over Conjure, initiation was central to the discipline of Rootwork. I'm biracial and my white great grandmother on my moms side was an Appalachian mountain witchy woman who's come to me in dream time and explained how I was passed down the gift. My grandmother always saw and talked to the dead, was precognitive, and just knew things. I have these gifts too. Now I need to know what I was passed from my father's african-american side. He wasnt in my life and I dont even know his name. I've seen myself as a black woman and man at different periods in time. Experienced so many other worldly experiences that nobody can explain. Details nobody can explain. I can feel gifts waiting that I don't know how to unlock. I need help and don't know where to go.
