I grew up in Utica. Left in '87 and haven't been back since '95. Looks like not much has changed. When I was a little kid it wasn't broken yet but then I watched it fall apart. I wish it could go back to the way it was before all the industry left.

Things are improving. A lot of new projects, the population's finally started bending back upwards. Whitesboro got worse durring the great recession, but NH I checked out during the late pandemic, and it had a lot of expansions and so much new stuff. A lot of the neighbourhoods in Utica proper are roughly unchanged. They're trying to figure out Bagg's Square with urban planning, since it's the kind of layout in vogue but it's not business-heavy. The did put a roundabout near there tho, which I don't think anyone believes is a good place for one. And I haven't met anyone who agrees with the monument they chose, which was a national-fodused covid statue and not something celebrating Utica's history.

Utica born and raised, I left in 1996. I miss what it was, my most memorable moments happened there. I still go back and always get that I miss home feeling. Can't go back though, been out of Utica too long to deal with the winter.

I grew up here, dirt poor. Never thought I'd make it out but I finally did. Now I have a good job in Boston. It's a terrible place but sometimes I miss it. So many memories of being a mallrat in the 90's. No reason to go back, there is nothing there for me now but ghosts.

Utica's heyday came from factories employing unskilled labor, and from heavy government subsidy (ie. the Air Force base in Rome). When these dried up, the economy died, leaving a surplus of bitter unskilled laborers who either had to move out, pick up new skills (mostly union dominated trades), or take up drinking. It was always the smallest and poorest of the upstate cities (compared to Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany), and lacks their geographic or historical advantages: eg. it doesn't have a port, is more isolated, lacks a PhD granting university to attract and retain skilled young people, isn't a state capital, etc. In the past 10 years it's gotten marginally better thanks to international immigrants, tons of state and federal money, and cheap housing attracting skilled remote work -- but there's still a long way to go.
@billtooke6642

Yep even compared to Binghamton (which had IBM) or Schenectady (which had GE, though Utica had a couple of GE plants) it was poorer.

It really was. But thanks to years of incompetence from elected officials like Ed Hannah who despite getting booted out of office everytime he was mayor for corruption still kept getting re-elected until he finally croaked. Plus losing so many of the high paying jobs the place just became a shit hole. Sure they try to fix it but hasn't happened in decades so doubt it will ever happen.

I can’t believe the architecture of many of the homes, really beautiful. I’m sad to hear Val Bialis has been closed due to the weather. I LIVED to ski there. Used to go to Mannys afterwards.
