I could never understand the lyrics until I heard you and a few others sing it. So it's basically "I can sing total gibberish as long as it sounds good to the music." I think Popper spilled the beans on the ENTIRE 90s music scene, man.

It's basically a song of a frustrated music theory geek who WANTS to " ... bust all your balloons ... I wanna burn of all your cities to the ground" ... make wonderful music and insightful lyrics ... .but that kind of stuff doesn't pay the bills. So he (the song character) throws in literary references around total gibberish that sounds good with the music, cut down to 3:05 radio play length, to keep the paychecks coming in ... And John Popper (the REAL frustrated theory geek) wrapped all of his song inside an almost the exact progression of Pachbel's Canon in D ... which is possibly one of the most recognizeable progressions in western music. You'll hear that song played in half of the weddings you'll attend in your life. Because that pays the bills :-) Talk about meta on top of meta.

I don't give a shit about lyrics most of the time. You can have a song without words, but you can't have a song with just words. I like poetry and appreciate art, and I get it when I hear a song with touching lyrics. But most of my favorite songs are verbally unsophisticated.
