One thing to think about when fishing for striper in the early spring season is that their metabolism is very slow. the large schools of anchovies have not entered shallow water yet and they are left to feed on small smelt and sand crabs which do not provide them with the same energy as the fatty anchovies or sardines. This makes them far less aggressive and less likely to attack the large SP minnow or other large, fast-moving lures. During these months I almost exclusively catch them on soft shelled sandcrabs, a slow-moving LC, or a small Kastmaster that are slow-moving and take the stripers less effort to chase down and attack
@Hook2Cook5 жыл бұрын
That's a very good point. Small kastmasters with a small feathered treble would probably be the ticket! thank you for that insight Everet. What sized kastmaster would you say? 1/2 oz?
@everetbowles55335 жыл бұрын
@@Hook2Cook as small as you can get away with in the conditions. I use a 1/4 oz if the water is calm enough.
@Hook2Cook5 жыл бұрын
yea, makes. sense. I was moving that LC very slow and I only got one tap out of that SP minnow. I have a friend who gets them on a 1 oz plug, but he walks distances and a good day for him seems to be 3 bites! Cant wait for warmer weather and anchovies coming in shallow!

Is striper fishing Monterey Bay in March any good? I see it's raining in your video. What time of year is this?
@andrewvillanueva42224 жыл бұрын
Cool striper. I remember back in the 80s and early 90s we could catch 20lbs stripers everyday. Nowadays you only see these 24 inch stripers. I haven't seen a 20lbs striper years. I guess all the big stripers stay in the Sacramento river system and in the channels.
@Hook2Cook4 жыл бұрын
It seems cyclical. You’re probably right some big ones stay in the fresh water but it does seem like the numbers are increasing based on the rainfall we’ve had flushing them into salt water. If we continuously get years of good rain, we’ll see a lot more big ones in numbers.
@andrewvillanueva42224 жыл бұрын
@@Hook2Cook l have talked to guys from the Sacramento area on the San Francisco party boats. They said they fish the Sacramento river system and the catch bigger stripers in the Sacramento river. I remember back in the 80s we could fill up 2 100 quart coolers full of 15 pound striper and up on the party boat fishing Rock pile and south tower. Even mels reef had big stripers. Nowadays on the party boat a 10 pound striper is big. I don't think it will ever be like the 80s and we had big stripers in the 15lbs range and up.

Seriously, I would really love to know the history of the migration patterns that brought fish to where they currently live. Recently, someone caught an angel fish down south. Those fish are usually found in the Indian Ocean. I’m sure each individual fish has traits that allow them to migrate further and further. It’s really funny because these ideas turn us into amateur Marine biologists.

Now you are up in my neck of the woods! (Coast) First priority was checking up on your lady which was smart of you, especially since all of this was on video. ;-) Good job on hanging in there and getting your first salt water striper. I caught a limit my first trip out about an hour North of where you fished in Santa Cruz County about 6yrs ago. I fished old school with a 12’ heavy rod and threw a Miki Jig. I could see bout 40-50 fisherman as I walked toward the waves and it looked like all were throwing pencil poppers or SP minnows and I did not see anyone land a fish. I figured nothing on the top so I would go deep. I caught my limit in less than 10 casts, 11.5 and 8 lbs. Everyone came over and asked what lure I used and not a single person that asked me had one. That Miki jig was the “go-to” striper lure 20 yrs ago. Tight lines
