What I really like about these sorts of builds is that they're harking back to the very early days of "hot rodding", when folks would just use what they could find, or had lying around, because no-one else was doing what they were and they had to figure it all out for themselves. Nowadays, it's almost all "drop an LS in it", with kits for damn-near everything and cheque-books taking over from lateral thinking. Bit surprised you didn't go straight to an internal pedal box - many advantages, not least it's not going to be anywhere near to being in the way. SMART move with the long transmission mount slots - it means that when (not if) the clutch needs work one just needs to disconnect one end of the prop-shaft, pop the gear lever, disconnect the clutch linkage/hose (STRONGLY recommend a dry break quick discomnnect to avoid bleeding hassles) as used, and the gearbox can be slid back as long as it has clearance and the front supported by a transmission jack - might even have potential for inclining it, to match the line of the engine crankshaft and make it MUCH easier to line up the input shaft and bellhousing dowels.

Has anyone considered how having a single bolt through a slotted engine mount might not be a great idea with regards to engine movement/vibrations? Seems like setting yourself up for it to fail the first time you floor it, particularly if you're doing hard launches in gymkhana 👀
@KHALABEEB Жыл бұрын
It might be an issue, but consider the fact that its not a high horsepower or torque application he should be ok. He might wear out bushings quicker though🤣🤷♂
@ReignitedAuto Жыл бұрын
Dodge Cummins engines use mounts with a single bolt in a slotted frame mount, they tend to make a fair amount of torque 😄 and they work just fine.
@shona5512 Жыл бұрын
Pretty sure Scotto said in the last episode that the slotted mounts are more for being able to position the engine for the gearbox and other components. Once they have everything test fitted and have the positioning of the engine finalized, they'll make another set of mounts that aren't slotted.
@ObscureGarage. Жыл бұрын
@@shona5512he just described in this episode that the slots are there to allow access to the steering rack. It’s a feature that’s needed but I agree it should probably be a dual stud motor mounts to help anchor and prevent any rotating under torque.
The only thing I'd be worried about is that the intake runners aren't compensating for the weird head geometry where half the cylinders have a longer intake port. I do think the exhaust side is more important to make sure 'equal length' is in fact equal though, so when it comes time for the exhaust side...
@fhblake04 Жыл бұрын
This. I would imagine the unequal length intake would make it a bit more difficult to make full effort power. I would also imagine the sound will be slightly off as well.
@shred1894 Жыл бұрын
@@fhblake04 Honestly, I think it might sound cool, and the performance would only be a few HP so it's probably not a huge deal. The exhaust side is the one that matters more because scavenging and whatnot.
@RyTrapp0 Жыл бұрын
Honestly shouldn't be too big of a deal, if you correct it in with individual cylinder cam lobe design then you can optimize each cylinder individually. This would give you a broader power cover with the 2 different runner lengths. Even at that, it's not like most people are running cams that are truly optimized for their intake & exhaust setups, if you're buying shelf parts rather than custom parts you're just "close enough"-ing it anyway, and more often than not "close enough" really is close enough(to not matter). Go look at old Can-Am cars like the McLaren M8 - glorified go-karts with big block Chevys, they commonly ran individual runner intakes with 2 different length velocity stacks(same thing as runner length). Mind you, it was as much for fitting all the velocity stacks on the manifold with the intake port arrangement as much as it was for broadening the power curve, but it works just fine. And looks totally bitchin!

SCOTTO: vr6 heads have different length intake ports, those matching length itbs are going to cause "mysteries" when attempting to tune... (differing air speed/flows/rates of change) you might want to run two different sized "injector stacks" / air horns, to null the differences. reference vwvortex custom intake manifolds and how people run different length intake runners, leading to the head. i build air cooled vws 9-5, and grew up in racing engine building, sprint cars with stacks/itbs on v8s. good luck! and i hope it runs great!

@shred1894 Жыл бұрын
That's what I'm worried about. Hopefully they make the exhaust runners compensate when they do the headers.
@RyTrapp0 Жыл бұрын
Not a big deal. Look at single plane intake manifolds for V8s - they have 2 different runner lengths, the corner cylinders have longer runners than the center cylinders. You can correct that by using 2 different cam lobes to have the 'ideal' lobe for each cylinder, but it really doesn't make that much of a difference. Old school V8 race cars would run 2 different velocity stack lengths as well just to fit all the stacks. No big deal.
@leafydialupking1 Жыл бұрын
Aren’t the intake runners different length between the even and odd number cylinders on the vr6? That’s kind of an issue for this you need trumpets of different lengths for those cylinders or else the VE map in the tune is going to be different between them. Like the odd and even cylinders are going to have different rpm torque peaks (and thus different fuel requirements).

For the sake of having a consistent location for the driveshaft length, and avoiding any possibility of the engine/trans sliding fore/aft, I think the trans mounts should not be slotted. The trans mount is easily accessible and can be unbolted and otherwise supported (on a jack or dolly) to shift the engine on its slotted mounts for steering rack servicing; making every mount slotted is not necessary. I'm all for servicability but putting a locating bolt on one portion of the powertrain to anchor the whole driveline is important, I can see the trans sliding back into and bottoming out the slip yoke or worse, forward and the yoke pops out entirely.

If a 12v Get the proper person to do a P&P and 41/39mm bigger valves, and Schrick 268 Cams, Mega Squirt Piggy Back, light weight UR Racing Pulleys, Autotech 10lb. Lightened Fly wheels, and 3.94 FD, Port and gasket match the lower intake manifold(if with ITB's do you use the lower mani?)and port gasket match the exhaust manifold. I think that will liven up your VR6 rather well. As someone who owned and modded a N/A VR6, the best thing you can do for headers is port and gasket match the exhaust manifolds to the head. The way the VR6 is a 15 degree angle set up, the flow gets really odd. If you are running a 24v VR6, Super Springs makes some decent headers. I know Techtonics tuning makes a great down pipe for the 12v VR6. I would also run Black Forest Race Motor Mounts, the stiffest ones they sell. Cool you have the 24v VR6 I'd try Super Sprint Headers they've been proven to make(depending on other mods)8whp-12whp to be conservative. Techtonics and Schrick makes me killer cams for The 24v VR6 as well. If you have more questions, people on VWVortex are pretty helpful.
