I think mulberry would be great for you to use. I had a massive limb fall in my backyard from my mulberry tree and it is currently air-drying in my basement. Unfortunately the grain is all over the place, but I understand that wood from the trunk is straight grained. It has a wonderful gold color when first cut and then turns to a nice bronze over time in the sun.
