My reason on why Russ should start is because the difference on energy and intensity. The Nuggets has been starting really,really slow with Jamal. Westbrook comes with a fire on him to put pressure on the ball, to attack hard, to deflect balls, to move the space, to play hard defense every second he's on the court. Is not about Westbrook putting points. That's irrelevant to me. Is about what Westbrook do on defense and playmaking. He feeds Jokic. He understand the assignment better than anyone else's on the court. Your whole goal and point is to GIVE THE BALL TO THE BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD. Not to dribble the ball out, not to do your NBA2K1 crossover like Jamal do, not to take non stop mid ranges, not to take contested 3's, not to go the opposite side of the screens set by Jokic. Your GOAL AS THE PG OF THE NUGGETS IS TO TAKE THE SCREEN. MAKE THE OPPOSITE PG CRASH INTO THE SCREEN OF JOKIC ATTACK THE SPACE CREATED BY THE SCREEN AND GIVE IT TO JOKIC. That's your whole goal, but apparently is something so complicated, so much to ask for a 50M player like Jamal who got such a tough time completing this task. Westbrook understand it. He just know the best player on the team need at least touch the ball in all possessions. Westbrook understand that you do what Jokic wants to do. If Jokic set up the play you follow. If he wants to screen you use it. If jokic wants to pop you give it. The problem with this team is that if Jokic is telling what to do, they just stand around, nobody moving, nobody cutting, nobody setting for others. Westbrook challenges Jokic to be involved in all play because he knows this bums like Jamal and MPJ can't create a play for themselves to save their life. MPJ the last weeks has been progressing quite a ton. He's attacking the rim, he's setting his own shots, he's cutting hard, moving without the ball. Is like the Nuggets completely forget their play book the moment Jokic is off the court One of my main issues with Jamal is that he just don't move. He bring the ball up. Give it,jog and put the softest screens and for the rest of the possession you see him standing still like he's annoyed he ain't dribbling the ball. Don't cut, Don't reposition like a premier shooter, don't set up a screen for other players. He just give it and then stand on the swings waiting

Nah, the numbers are clear. Nuggs are better in Jok+Mal minutes then they are in Jok+Brook minutes. ANd the difference is not small. We could theoretically move the mal to 2 and slot Brook in 1 but that would mean benching Braun and that would be a significant defensive downgrade to a team that already struggles defensively. No, Westbrook is great at replacing Mal when he is hurt which he often is, and slotting in with the first 5 to let Mal go to bench eatly so he can stagger with the bench in the non-jokić minutes.

I'm not sure these videos are the best examples of what Westbrook brings to the table. I feel the first 3 were actually showing the impact of Jokic guarding pick and rolls. I'm torn about Westbrook. I love his effort, passion and the fact that he is humble. On the other hand his decision making has always been a problem (worst 3 point shooter on high volume ever, even worse than Antoine Walker, although this year he is shooting them at a career best) and the advanced stats really don't like him. Of all the Nuggets rotation players he has the worst net rating when pared with Jokic. Part of that is because he plays a lot of minutes with Strawther (who's net rating with Jokic is only a hair better) but it's still a huge gap to the rest.

Look at the on/off numbers for pairings with Jokic and Westbrook and Jokic and Murray. Yeah, Jamal has been underwhelming so far, but Jokic + Murray and no West are +13 per 100 possessions, while Jokic + Westbrook and no Murray are just +1.5 per 100 possessions. So while Russ has been great on his limited role and Murray has still to play up to his potential, the talk about Westbrook starting over Murray is just nuts. Not to mention the issues this would cause in the playoffs. Give it time, folks. You don't alienate the guy who has helped the team get their only championship, just signed a max extension and can't be traded till the off-season. The season is still young.

With all the missed time from Gordon and Murray it's hard to isolate all the data, but that includes a lot of time with the rest of the starters, since it includes both the 5 games where Russ started himself and also because Russ is usually the first to come in for Murray, and Jokic plays the full first and third quarters (for the most part). There's no way the few minutes Russ plays with Jokic with other reserves in instead of starters accounts for over +10 net rating, and the fact is the team still has been great with Murray and Jokic on the court, with or without other starters, so he's not the reason they're losing either way. If the bench is the reason for the 10 net rating difference of Murray over Russ, then clearly that's the problem, and not Murray. Yes, Russel is a better defender right now, but that's not enough to justify starting him over Murray - not to mention all the issues this can bring in the playoffs, plus the fact Murray cannot be traded before the off-season - one simply does not bench and therefore alienates a player that has just signed a max extension and historically has been crucial to the title run because he's not played his best to start the season, much less so when the results are still positive with him on the court. People just need to chill out and stop with the knee jerk reactions that will actually bring more problems than they allegedly would solve.
