The ONLY reason the Warriors put up with his overblown tantrums, technicals, and ejections, are because of this superior defense effort. They know the details (and the rest of the league does too) that he covers for them, and why nobody has been able to replace that. Now, imagine how good that was 6-7 years ago when he was younger, running faster, etc. No wonder when coupled with 2 of the greatest shooters in league history, the Warriors were champions. And let's not forget, they were champs only 2 seasons ago.
@Grievous_Ай бұрын
That’s why us Warriors fans try to CONVINCE other fans how important he is, the casual fan sees a player who’s always mad at refs and even his own teammates at times but what REAL fans see is a player who is the IDENTITY to a GREAT Warriors DEFENSE when they’re all defending at a high level which will ALWAYS led to wins!
@dre32pittАй бұрын
Sure the effort is good.. Russell Westbrook gives high effort on defense, it doesnt make him a good defensive player (dude still gets caught on backdoor plays like he enjoys backdoor play).. it's his defensive IQ that separates Draymond from the rest.. He's like a Ronnie Lott or Palomalau, just playing centerfield and reading what the offense is doing.. The greatest defender of his generation.. Think KG, but in a shorter package (damn near the same wingspan though).. It's not sexy and unless you're a basketball nerd, people dont see the true value of Draymond.. They just see 'triple singles'... The earmark of a casual fan
@pmneely63Ай бұрын
@@dre32pitt Had the extreme privilege to see Mo Cheeks when he got started (went to his first two games in Philly). Only 6-1, but a fierce, defensive point guard that actually guarded George Gervin as a rookie. He had some great games offensively from time-to-time, but he was so valuable to the Sixers 'cause of that defense. Was the coach on the floor with Doc, Moses, Toney, Bobby Jones...playing winning basketball doing the things that really help you win, not just score. Teammates know their value so well.
@dre32pittАй бұрын
@@pmneely63 exactly.. I'd argue GPII is another one of those 'unsung' heroes.. with his tenacious defense.. defensive IQ.. and freakish ups (dude got some long ass arms as well, lol).. The littlest dude to effectively play the dunker spot ever, lol..

Pre injury Klay's defense combined with Draymond's defense was the heart of their dynasty. It isn't Klays offense they miss the most, it's Klay being one of the best two way stars in the league that they miss.
@NateT092Ай бұрын
Also when had iggy coming off the bench or added to the "death" lineup, great wing defender and was like another offensive facilitator on the court.
@TheMissinLinkАй бұрын
Klay was a good defender. Iggy was an all time great wing defender. Add in KDs versatility and rim protection they were so damn tough.
@Grievous_Ай бұрын
Wiggins is playing that role now on defense what pre injury Klay did, that’s why when a lot of people were calling for the front office to trade Wiggins I was MAD and I would’ve been PISSED if they actually listened to the fans and media, thank god they didn’t and kept Wiggins because he’s a top 5 defensive POA defender in the ENTIRE Nba!!!!! Wiggins defense is also what allows Draymond to make some of the crazy plays he does because he TRUSTS Wiggs to hold down the perimeter and somether them so he doesn’t have to worry about being the one to do it! And I know Klay isn’t the defender he was pre injury but he can stillhold his own against slower guys or guys with the same footspeed as him! Klay actually does a pretty good job on WING players rather guards because on average a Guard is quicker than Klay than a Wing player
@docgrowsfoodАй бұрын
Remembering back when the Warriors had Bogut and Draymond defending the paint and were absolutely stifling opposing offenses at the rim. An often overlooked part of the Cavs 3-1 comeback in the 2016 finals was the injury to Bogut opened up the paint for Kyrie and Lebron to attack.

What I love about this, is that to the untrained eye, it looks like Draymond isn't doing all that much. Someone who doesn't understand NBA defense might look at him and go "but he's just standing there". But position and awareness is EVERYTHING on defense, and Draymond is always in the right place, and aware of the right things.
