The ancient Romans were brilliant engineers. And yet when you look inside of the coliseum today it's like looking at the half eaten remains of a dead carcass. But the decay isn't so much due to time and age, as it is due to that of other builders who later on stripped off a lot of the marble veneer for their own projects. Not only on the outside, but also on the interior. That's why there are no longer any marble seats? The sad shame of it is that If it were not for these scavengers, it would have still have retained much of it's earlier splendor.
