Oh, the memories. In early 1964 Hootenanny was coming to San Diego (State?). My college age older brother and his friends sang together and auditioned for Hootenanny. One of the guys had a solo and he choked. My brother stepped up and did the solo, but the song was ruined by then. No deal on the Hootenanny appearance. My brother and his friends are all gone now, but I have never lost my love of folk music. Hootenanny was great…while it lasted.

Great story! They probably never let your brother's buddy forget it.

First : The Limeliters. Then Ian and Sylvia . Then Richard and Jim and to conclude the Limeliters back again. I thought it might be useful to name the singers !

I love the video but I don't care for the sarcastic comments in the balloon. Why post this type of priceless video if you're going to make fun of it, Mr. BigKill?

LOL! You talk like I threw tomato soup on a Picasso! I posted it because I love the music, but simply tossed a few jibes, not at the artists or music, but at the audience of college students who changed so much in the years following the airing of this show. I'll not apologize.

@@bigkill1 OK, you're right. Maybe I overreacted. The cartoon comments threw me out of my nostalgic reverie. No need for you to apologize; at least, you have the capacity to post these interesting videos which is a lot more than I can say for myself. Happy Thanksgiving!

@@multicaruana Thanks, I know what you mean about "nostalgic reverie" - both aurally and visually. Things like this ARE good for that! Spent much of Thanksgiving in that space. Hope you got to enjoy some of that today, as well.

This show had a blacklist, performers who were not invited on the show such as Pete Seeger. According to a bio of Phil Ochs there was once a picket line outside where the show was being televised. It's said that there was more talent on the picket line than on the show. I loved the cartoon balloons you have on the video. Very funny. And I say that as a singer-songwriter myself and as someone who has his own folk show on radio.

Very interesting - I never heard that before! I find it interesting that Penn State ended up naming that place after Paul Robeson. (Who, I'll bet, would have been blacklisted for that show.)

@@bigkill1 Paul Robeson sure would have been blacklisted from the show.

Do you have the episode they taped at Syracuse University, New York with the Clara Ward Singers "Come On In The Room" they sing?

I have all three "The Best of Hootenanny" DVDs but I haven't watched them for a while. They are available on Amazon and eBay. When I did a quick Google search I couldn't find all the schools that were represented on the DVDs and one site had the list of songs and artists but I didn't see the Clara Ward Singers. But you've given me some incentive to watch the DVDs again soon!

@@bigkill1 ok, thanks so much. Let me know. They probably only have one performance from SMU singing SWING LOW CHARIOT. I saw a snippet of them do the other song on a Hootenanny promo trailer.

A number of years ago I found on eBay pre-release advance media copies for the press of "The Best of Hootenanny" 1, 2, and 3. It might have been a Public Television show.

This music lead to protest music (civil rights movement and Vietnam) and then folk rock. Now it's pretty much gone.

“This music” is called “Folk Music”, because it was simple & for folks who enjoyed singing along in the audience while they sat comfortably on the floor. The folks could also pick up an acoustic Guitar/Banjo/Ukulele to easily play/sing & perform these songs themselves.

Ironically, ABC wouldn't allow Pete Seeger to appear because he was blacklisted from appearing on television and radio {"too controversial"}. Other folk singers and groups who supported him wouldn't appear on "HOOTENNANNY", either. What finally did the series in was the influence of British rock in early 1964 (including The Beatles)......and ABC scheduling the show in its second season opposite Jackie Gleason, who had more viewers with his "AMERICAN SCENE MAGAZINE" on CBS.
