Well this takes me back some years to when I was an apprentice hairdresser. All junior staff members were given the task of washing the towels on a rota basis in a Hotpoint Supermatic very similar to this. That machine was replaced by a Hotpoint top loader automatic which made life easier.

The top bearing is worn on this machine hence the slight lateral movement of the agitator
@HooverLux4 жыл бұрын
I thought it may be a bearing issue, but my mate has it now and he is gonna fix it all up again like new 🥰
@syhooverman54183 жыл бұрын
It was a very common problem on these machines. It then caused leakage of water down into the reciprocating gearbox with the resultant leakage of oil on to the floor. SERVIS Twintubs were FAR better made with that problem in mind The early Hotpoint TwinTubs had a tall agitator shaft where the reciprocating motion was at the top of the shaft controlling the 4 vane agitator. Well above the water level. My mother had one for 18 years before the spin motor finally burnt out.

I had to have a lol when you said your Aqualtis and the twin tub were both made by Hotpoint - maybe in name, but the twin tub was made in Great Britain, actually by Hotpoint, and the Aqualtis is made by Indesit, somewhere in Europe, probably in Turkey, and a Hotpoint logo put on it. I can guarantee that the Aqualtis won't be still washing clothes when its 40 odd years old, unlike the twin tub. Most front loaders die a death within 3 - 7 years these days, usually from spider fracture or bearing failure. When I look at the insides of that twin tub, I can see real quality, and it was much more complex than the Hoovermatic that my granny used to have (although hers was a 1964 model) in that hers had only one pump, and a water valve that had to be turned to drain the tub, together with turning the spinner on, using its pump to drain the tub. The Hoover also used a vertical spinning wheel impeller on the rear side of the tub, rather than a bottom mounted cone that the Hotpoint used. It looks like the Hotpoint uses some kind of fluid clutch or coupling on the spinner, so that it can spin slowly when full of water, and then speeds up when the spinner tub is empty of rinse water. My guess of the age of that twin tub, would be possibly 1979, although I'm nowhere near as knowledgeable about washers as I am about vacs, lol
@HooverLux7 жыл бұрын
MadAboutHoovers That one was made in the early to mid 80's, I was told 83. I do agree about the name lol, but I really look after the Aqualtis and hopefully will last a while with my care, but will definitely not be around in 30 years time, will be recycled as a tin of soup maybe or a part in something else. 😂

Our church caretaker (retired, elderly, Ron Read, lives in ground floor flat next to the chapel; Pentecostal - Lincoln Road chapel, Ponders end, Enfield, London Middlesex) has the same twin tub like that, earlier this year, dad told me at church, Ron’s washing machine had a fault and could I have a look at it. I went to Ron in excitement (I had seen these on KZbin and at our Grandmothers beach chalet, next door neighbour had one, but it died and she threw it away ☹️) and asked what was wrong with it. He said the spin dryer was humming and not spinning and could I fix it? I said yes! Later that week, me and dad went to Ron’s flat and picked up the twin tub and I later tested it with the back panel off, the spinner motor was humming and I manually spun the fan on top, anti-clockwise and it stalls, and then clockwise and it then started up, I said to mum I had found what was wrong with it and what I did and she said “Ron won’t be doing that when you give it back” I did examine the motor (induction type) and the starter windings was black, sooty and smelt of burning and I assumed it had over-heated and short circuited. I removed the motor and took it to my bedroom where I dismantled and studied it and devised how to replace the windings. I asked Google and it took me to Wiki-how - to replace the windings in an induction motor and I remembered that a DIY KZbin blogger had made a motor winding loom out of a board and nails. I improved the process by buying a mechanical counter and cut the windings out of the motor to count the turns. ***** After replacing the starter windings I put the motor back in the twin tub and tested it (unfortunately the print had been rubbed/had faded off the control panel/bezel and wasn’t visible, I went to KZbin to see a video of it to look at the print/markings to operate it. I had initially looked for a replacement motor online, but it was obsolete, but I did see a replacement bezel, but after managing to replace the windings it had gone ☹️ (someone else had bought it before me). I had visualised where the markings were for the dials and did a test wash & spin - a piece of wire had been dislodged in the spinner and had fallen into the pump and I removed it. Despite that, it worked and we gave it back to Ron - 😁 and he hugged me and gave me a thank you card with an owl on it and a box of chocolates. He wasn’t fussed if I couldn’t fix it as he was using it (and a jam jar) as a prop for a work surface in his kitchen and he had a separate spin dryer. He Was a bit of a hoarder and had another twin tub but we threw it out as it wasn’t worth for me to look at it and fix it ☹️

I didn’t know that the spin clutch needed lubricating, thought that would defeat it. Also would have adjusted the brake belt for the spinner and was transfixed with the safety interlock for the spinner lid, motor switch and brake, that the belt acts as a pretensioner to stop the lid from lifting up and turns the motor off. I did have the opportunity to watch the spinner spin up with the lid open by manually pushing down on the switch (attached to brake tensioner - tensions when released) and using the automatic spin-rinse; the spin motor power is rerouted to a pressure switch that senses the water level in the spinner and turns the spinner on-off when rinsing. For the test wash I did put two calgon tablets into the washer and expected to see lots of limescale in the lint filter but I didn’t, instead found it in incrusted inside the agitator (I did scrape it off) and in the wash - clothes came out with lime flakes on them 😳 why didn’t it fall off/dissolve in the wash? I also had inadvertently put synthetics in it - mum complained that they were creased after the spin dry. “well they didn’t know that in the 70s” I said - (spins at 3210 rpm) would have put them in the modern automatic front loader (indesit, washer+dryer) and spun at a low speed.
