The H1 has torsen diffs as stock. Hey, I know something about this one! To lock the diff on that Hummer you gotta push the break down a bit while giving it some throttle. It's an odd system but once you figure it out it becomes second nature. Says the guy who drove a Hummer twice... It's a Torsen Differential if I remember what I was told correctly.

Its not to lock the diffs, its just so the diff lets power to that wheel wich is not spinning, basic diff nowledge, works on every car
@AndyFuntown3 жыл бұрын
@@Cornetto1997 That's not correct. Hummers use a torsen differential, that's why this works. Torsen diffs are nearly indestructible and maintenance free, but require even just a small amount of friction to function as a locked diff - hence the drag on the brakes "locks" the diff. An open diff would just transfer the load to the path of least resistance, it would never "lock."

A lot of the comments aren't quite right about "locking the diffs." the H1 only has a locking center differential. LL stands for low lock. That puts the transfer case in low gear and locks the center, locking the torque between the front and the rear. But the front and rear end are still open differentials. (note: I've been corrected. They use torsen differentials). There is no way to lock them in stock form. But, if you apply the brakes, you can stop one or two of the spinning tires. It isn't perfect because you are sending equal braking pressure to all 4 tires, but it is enough to stop the loss of torque through the spinning tire and torque will go to the tire with traction.
@hungryhungryhummer3 жыл бұрын
Completely wrong. All h1s pre 2006 have Torsen locking diffs front and rear. When you put tension on the worm gears in the diffs by pressing the break pedal and giving it gas, it fully locks up the differentials. Look up Torsen differential hummer h1. It’s really neat how it works.

@kevinfleming99193 жыл бұрын
Don't need to use the E-brake just the regular brake. Hummers use the brakes to modulate the 4x4 system. Have to use both pedals at the same time and adjust braking pressure as you use the throttle to get more or less traction to the wheels you want to be pulling. It helps with the vertical climbing of the front to get over obstacles by having the rears keep pressure against the object while the fronts get more traction to lift it over the ledge/object.

The fact that front windshield and roof could hold the weight of hummer without penetration is pretty incredible

Hummer uses an auto locker which engages when you have it in 4L and HOLD the BRAKE PEDAL halfway down so the calipers grab the free spinning tires

How would an offroad recovery driver react if you called them when you got the Hummer stuck? "I was offroading in my H1 and got high-centred on some tougher than expected green-facade a few feet higher than the surrounding terrain. I'm not far away from the road. Can you recover me?" I'd like to see their reaction to an H1 stuck on top of a couple of 'green' Prii, although, experience recovery drivers have probably seen far worse/more crazy stuff, so it might not surprize them at all. :)

@Hoovies Garage you should ask the Wizard about the "Locker" situation since these beasts were his bread and butter at one time.

You were bottomed out on the arch-roofs of the Priuses. To get off, you needed to use the chainsaw to cut the b pillars.

I hear an diesel locomotive idling nearby. You need the Wizard to shoehorn a loco engine under the Hummer hood! 😂😂😂

I'm so disappointed a H1 owner doesn't know how to use lockers. Time for hoovie to give up his man card.
