I knew it! The wizard is not totally right. I mean come on if a car calls for 5w30 and you live in hot climate then you should use 5w40. Even the owners manual says that, on pretty much every car! The w number should not be changed or if in very cold climate can be changed from 5w/10w to 0w but the next number should be changed accordingly too preferably not changed to lower a number than specified for the non owners manual reading and only oil cap reading stupid owner/mechanic! The same for the drunk Scotty Kilmer! Hard language sorry simple principle. You drive hard, use 5w40 instead of 5w30. Your car is made to go fast, use 5w40 instead of 5w30.

This is 100% fact. I had one and once the nostalgia from the movie wore off, quickly unloaded it. I took a small loss on it, but everything I've seen out of these cars for decades since prove that my loss would have been much greater had I kept it. It is just an absolute piece of crap of a car. Which is a shame really as the car is so unique looking.

I am one of the few people my age I know that experienced a DeLorean before Back to the Future. All came down to happenstance. Mom bought a 1984 Volvo sedan new. I was 5 when we went to the dealer to get the car and none other than a new or newish (might have been new, or lightly used) DeLorean was front and center in the showroom. I remember being fascinated with the car, they let me sit in it and play with the doors. I remember being disappointed that the horn was on the side stalk. We drove that Volvo across the US to Doug DeMuro territory in 85 and it was there that I saw Back to the Future. I can safely say that even without the film, the car left an impression on me, though the film immortalized it for sure.

if it's bosch k jetronic then cold start issues start with cold start injector, it operates on on it's own loop by a thermo-time switch, the switch is located somewhere in head or coolant line, if the coolant is warm or the switch is broken it doesn't send current to the cold start injector, usually it's the switch that brakes than the injector.

In part one Doc says the delorean is electrical and the time circuits are nuclear. Then Marty rips a fuel line in the cave. Making the plot of the 3rd movie not make any sense but a detail they could have left out was having to convert the time machine back to gas powered after it sat for years in the mine. I tend to overlook plot discrepancies like this because obviously the movies are more about fun then an attempt at accuracy.

Back in 1982 I was in a band that got signed to a record label. One time we were going to meet the label's owner for lunch - he had brought his brand-new Delorean, which had a stereo system (with an EQ, etc) that was built into the dashboard such that you had to press a switch that was hidden, and then that part of the dash would life up, flip over, and then settle itself back down - exposing the controls! When it was tucked away though you would have never ever known it was there. It was completely hidden; and this thing was huge too! It was pretty cool... I also had a chance to sit behind the wheel and start the car - they wouldn't let me take it for a test drive though (or anyone else in the group) because we were all high and drunk. Go figure!

You know they have a 5th fuel injector that's electrically operated called a cold start injector which is operated by a heated binetallic switch called a thermotime switch. If either of those things aren't working, cold starting will be a royal PITA. Note: I know nothing about DeLoreans, but VWs, Audis and Porsche all used the same K-Jetronic (and KE-Jetronic) systems, so it should be the same.

Bosch K Jetronic was used on so many cars in the 80's. It was pretty much the main FI system. Especially in Europe. Ford Capri V6's, Renault 30, Renault 25. Alpine GTA V6 Turbo, Ford Escort RS Turbo's, Saab 900 Turbo's. I think the list is pretty much endless. The MAIN thing to check is to ensure the Air-flow plate is central in the venturi. Run a feeler gauge around the airflow plate and the gap all the way around should be even. If not you can undo the central nut and move the plate. You will then need to attach a CO% meter to the exhaust and check the idle mixture is right. 1.5% is about there. If not, you drop a small allen key down the hole he was talking about and turn it in VERY small amounts. And watch the CO%.

The Delorean engine is the same 2.8 PRV V6, as lifted straight from the Renault 30 TX of 1980. Rated for 155BHP over here back then. Although i think they put some more emissions stuff on it for the US and that took it down even more. I have a 1988 Renault Alpine GTA 2.5 V6 Turbo, its slightly tuned to 230BHP. You can drop that PRV V6 straight into the Delorean for a bit more get up and go....

Don't adjust the fuel ration screw Bob is telling you about. There's a reason it's capped off. If you still have the car, the cold start can be solved with a simple cheap O ring on the side of the Bosch Jetronic fuel distributor. It get's flatted over time and allows air to seep in causing the fuel system to de-pressurize. It's easy to access and only takes a few minutes to replace, however, the hardest part of the fix is getting the O ring back into the distributor without tearing it. Make sure you use a lot of soluble grease or lube and carefully insert it back in.

A friend of mine owns a DeLorean. One major issue is the seals on the gull wing doors. My friend lives in Las Vegas, NV. He normally has to change the door seals every 2 years max. The dry air of the desert dries them that quickly. This is the case even if the car is stored in a garage as well. He considers this a small price to pay with owning a DeLorean.

I remember when the DeLorean's first came out and a guy who had a gas station down the road bought one. He beat that car. Anyway, as far as the mirrors falling off, I just 'glued' the mirror on my '99 LeSabre with clear silicon and it never came off. I had also 'glued a piece of flashing over a hole in the rear fender well with silicon and it lasted 7 yrs until I got rid of it due to rust. Thanks for sharing.

On the cold start, issue check the fuel pressures and see if it fits in the spec of the warm-up regulator. The problem in testing cold start you only have one shot to testing. You can actually adjust the regulated if needed. Also, check and replace all the injector seals. While you have the injectors out you can see if the back of the intake valves has carbon build-up. That's another problem. I'm sure the wizard will get it right.

Dude looks like cross between Cat Whisperer Jackson Galaxy and Captain Ben Sisko from Star Trek DS9. Definitely a knowledgeable guy. I look forward to watching his video concerning Hoovie. BTW - I have a the same Bosch fuel system on my similar-vintage VW, and it had the same cold start issue. Definitely an issue with the cold-start injector circuit. Follow these steps: 1. Flush the fuel line from the fuel distributor to the cold start injector to ensure there's no blockage. Bosch CIS systems are not engineered to use ethanol blends and are HIGHLY sensitive to fuel contamination and deposits. I only use Shell V-Power Premium 91 octane - it has no ethanol (at least in Canada where I'm at). 2. Check that the cold-start injector is operational. It requires electrical power to open the valve (unlike the mechanical CIS injectors on the intake runners). There is a bi-metal thermostat switch mounted somewhere on the engine which routes power to the injector - make sure that the wiring is OK and that Thermoswitch is OK (switch cold - closed circuit; switch warm - open circuit). 3. Ensure that the relay that powers the thermoswitch is operational - it should have constant 12v when the car is running. That was the problem with my car - the relay was missing! Once I replaced it the car fired up as quickly as if it were warm - I could drive it cold like a modern car. It was a freakin' miracle! Hope that helps the Car Wizard diagnose the problem. I also hope he charges Hoovie double for the repair. I'm still mad about the idiotic burn-out he did with the AMG wagon.
