Because the GH5 has such great light monitoring features I found myself the first couple of years exposing everything to look mid-day. Meaning I didn't allow natural shadows or silhouettes to help enhance the story. Because the camera is so amazing with all readouts I actually trusted the camera more than my eye. Just lately I am starting to play a lot more with dark scenes and I find the camera really shines there. I know folks say this isn't a low light camera, which is true for making night look like day. But it is great if you allow night to look like night. Hope this makes sense.
@CalebHoover4 жыл бұрын
yeah i totally agree! I think there's something to be said about the storytelling and matching what is going on in the scene. if you can use your camera to do that and enhance the story with the visuals, that's where it really comes together. thanks for sharing!

I held off on the V-Log upgrade until getting an external recorder (two years later), because you really need to shoot in Pro Res or 10bit/ALL-I/400Mbps to gain it's benefits. My older SD cards were not up to the task, and it still made more sense to record to SSDs on an Atomos Shogun 7 than buy SD cards capable of All-I recording.

My biggest mistake has been relying on autofucus! I really recommend putting in the time to practice manual focus. Other thing I found out recently is that the aperture sweet spot for any lens is 2 stops above the lowest. Very useful when it comes to getting sharp shots instead of just putting it on the absolute lowest setting. Check out Daniel Schiffers video 7 tips to sharp videos to see the in depth explanation.

I don't see how so much of the idea of a one camera or even type of camera in a tool box is beneficial to getting a job done. Yes, I may only need one maybe two cameras for nature, scenery and sports but, content? I Usually have a minimum of three camera going. I switched over from Sony, when the GH5 came out, with a G7 for the B roll, second angle. Yuneec 500 4K was the drone of choice back then. Now I have G7, G85, G9, GH5, S5, S1R, six GoPro's, DJI Mavic Pro 2, two Phantom 4 Pro's and a few other camera 📷. Getting a dance, interview or content in as few takes as possible is extremely important. It is the next progression of the same thought of this content. Don't limit yourself with the thought of just one camera and don't use budget as an excuse. None of my Lumix camera 📷 have fallen off in price on the used market but, one a Lumix TS-7, which I hate. I would say find the ecosystem you work best with, and invest in that. I work real well with the menu system of Panisonic, hate the Sony menu system. I still fight the auto focus of Lumix. Anyways, just as you expand in using your camera at a professional level you need a professional approached to having a tool box that can do a complete job on demand. A find a good lumix group of tools 🔧 are a GH5, G9 and a G85 or G7. I do use the V-LOG L of the GH5 and G9 for Surf 🏄♂️ , Snow and Sun. Expose for the highest highlights and adjust in Davinci Resolve Studio. I am still on the fence about HLG. It's hard to bring the cameras that can't make grade. Anyways, my point was running more then one camera for work has become a professional approached that I feel is necessary in this market.

Thing that caught me out was that audio isn't always recorded - I was recording a conference talk just after I got the GH5, and had to adjust for the LED lighting flickering. I did that with synchroscan rather than adjusting the shutter angle. Bad new - no sound. Good news - I was only using camera sound as backup/sync so main recording was fine.
@CalebHoover4 жыл бұрын
oh man that would make me nervous!! glad you had that other audio!
@TheSeanBampton4 жыл бұрын
There's one thing I've learned as a wedding shooter and that is good audio will trump bad video, but the reverse is not true. Bad audio will suck the life out of good video footage 99 times out of 100. You were wise to have a secondary audio source. I usually run three for a wedding, just to make sure (I'm probably a little paranoid).

Hi Caleb, I am using the GH5 and I just realized a big problem when filming videos. When I keep Everything the same and film indoors my videos play fine but when I video outside in brighter light something is happening so my videos get all pixelated. Even the thumbnail for the outside .MOV file is a quicktime icon (on my iMac) whereas the video filmed inside has one of the frames as the thumbnail icon. I tried so many different things like adjusting the focus option from ASF/AFF to M but that does not make a difference. I have the settings just like your settings in your video about the GH5 settings that you mention in this video. When I shoot photos outside there is no problem. Also I can view the video in camera preview without the pixelation but when I take it from my SD card onto my iMac it plays horribly. It looks like a bunch of color cubes. I do not really know where to start with figuring out what is going on. Do you have any ideas?

Hey Caleb, Ive been watching your vids for a long time and my job finally bought me a GH5 a few weeks back. Whether I shoot 180d, or double my frame rate manually the motion blur is kind of strange, like I get a weird refresh rate or something. Definitely not normal. I switched from the Canon C100 and Canon 5D family because I love what I'm seeing from GH5 creators but for the life of me, can't figure out what is going on. Any ideas what this good be?
@simblethings4 жыл бұрын
I love how customisable the GH5 is! One of my fave things about the cam. Fn1 is for that WiFi so I can connect to the app nice and quickly. I do photography too, and find it really useful to have Constant Preview on a function button, so necessary if you're doing 5X macro stuff. I've just about learnt how to read the histogram, slightly get the other scopes but I do need to learn them better for sure. Most of my videos are pieces to camera at home, so it's not a big deal but I'd like to know that stuff. Agreed with you RE: V-Log, it's annoying that it's a paid upgrade, especially because it doesn't cost them anything. I heard/read somewhere that it's a paid upgrade so no-one enters that mode by accident and wastes the time of Panasonic's help-line, I have no idea to the truth of that, but I wouldn't be surprised. I'll probably end up buying it at somepoint, probably at the same time I pay for the full version of Davinci Resolve so I can use 10-bit :P Stay well through the lockdown 👍🏽
@CalebHoover4 жыл бұрын
yeah those custom buttons are awesome! that histogram really helps but knowing understanding some of those other scopes will really allow you to dial in that exposure. the histogram kind of gives you an overall idea of exposure but not detailed. i've never heard that theory about the v-log and why it's extra but that's really interesting and i totally could see that. v-log is kind of a hassle but it would be good to learn at some point. thanks for tuning in! ✌️
