With those wide arm movements,how well does this style adapt to defending yourself in more closed spaces?

Ok great you learn this Material from your sifu thanks for sharing! it’s just all of a sudden some teachers in these arts are demonstrating material from a few hop gar dvds released from mainland China , this is fine for personal growth !

Looks powerful. Question on the focus mitt drill; looks like a power back fist followed by a hook type punch. What part of the fist is making contact with that strike? Curious...
@SifuChrisChilds8 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure which one you exactly mean but there are two that follow the back fist you could be referring to. the one immediately following the backfist is called kup choi and it is thrown similar to an overhand right in boxing with some difference. The next one sweeps across low and is called lam choi. both make contact with the inside part of the fist(like a close handed slap) and rake with the fore knuckles.

why do lama pai and hop gar look so much like choy li fut?
@Jynxedlove6 жыл бұрын
They're actually cousin styles. Grandmaster Chan Tai San also did a lot to bring the styles closer to each other in future generations, as they were usually taught combined with Choy Li Fut. Choy Li Fut is comprised of several Gar styles as combined by Chan Heung, including Hop Gar, as well as drawing from some northern styles as well. Hop Gar, while being one of the Gar styles Chan Heung learned, is also in the Lama family. Depending on who you ask, Lama Pai and Hop Gar can be the same style, but I do not know details on their differences or lack thereof. You can also see the basic Lama Pai punches mirrored similarly and expanded upon in the core arm motions of Choy Li Fut, though I have only seen those defined when the style is taught under the name Lama Pai. Usually names of styles in the same family share a word, but Choy Li Fut does not because it was named to honour the three teachers that Chan Heung had learning.

@@Jynxedlove If I know well, Chan Heung had learned 3 styles, Fut gar, Lee gar and Choy gar, but I hadn’t heard of him learning Hop gar. Of course this can be possible. As far as I know, one of the 10 tigers of Canton was a Hop gar master, and he befriended with a Hung gar master (he was also member of 10 tigers of Canton), they practiced together, and therefore Hop gar techniques were incorporated into Hung gar.
@Jynxedlove3 жыл бұрын
@@tomcartman9434 It could be that. I mostly know my history from oral re-tellings by my Sifu and Grand-master.

"Kuen" is like a Form, Kata(in japanese for Karate), etc.. Hop Gar is the name of the kung fu and "kuen" is one of the form, you do understand?
@BearsArms456 жыл бұрын
AssassinLoktar kuen just means fist. It's in the name of some forms but it is also in the name of some styles of Kung fu. Like hung kuen.

You don’t know a art from watching a dvd on a form then doing your interpretation of its meaning No lama footwork understanding in application being good in one art doesn’t make you automatically good in another ,humility 🙏🏽
@SifuChrisChilds5 жыл бұрын
Karl Knoble what are you talking about? Nobody watched a dvd, my kungfu all comes from learning under my sifu Sam Ng from Hong Kong. If according to you I’m doing it wrong I’ll take it as a compliment because I’ve seen you and your Sifu’s “demonstrations”. With humility 🙏🏻

@@SifuChrisChilds Dear Sifu! I would like to ask what is the relationship between Hop gar and Choy Lee Fut? What are the similarities and differences? Which is "better" for fight?
