Romanticising the fact that the poorest group of people essentially work year-round. 'But this work is better, because you're outdoors'

My parents and grandparents used to regularly go hop picking in the autumn as it was a traditional working holiday in the countryside. They didn't have to go hop picking for the money. They went because it was fun for all the family and a little extra money was a happy bonus. But they also used to visit the seaside a couple weekends every summer too. They also regularly went on drinking days out called a beano which is essentially a coach full of friends getting drunk on a daytrip somewhere nice.

@sianwarwick633 Most people were really upset that Hoppin’ ended and machines were used. They went on to pick fruit in the summer. Yes, people were poor. That was the norm for working classes back in the day. And do you know what? I remember my mum and dad’s best friends turning up on the farm in their Rolls Royce, they still loved Hoppin’ in the 70’s. They didn’t need to do it for the money. They loved it. So many Hop pickers from London moved down to Kent because they loved it so much. And they aren’t poor any longer, they are doing very well, thank you very much!u
