Is it just me or does the person who read the opening verse sound like the narrator for the NIV in the Holy Bible app??

It probably is. Max McClean is the voice and he does lots of voice work for audio Bible resources. He also apparently showed up at Tim Keller's church fairly often because you'll hear him often reading scripture

I think I understand ‘not looking down our noses at anyone’. I’ve always gotten that based on the life of Jesus, His example, that’s what God’s love is, and our salvation. I’m interested if someone would comment on my question. Belief of the Church is salvation through Jesus Christ. How does a church teach what is a sinful lifestyle without appearing to be looking down our noses? How is church membership determined or should membership be abolished? Have I missed what Tim is saying?

You did miss what Tim was saying he was dealing with a different issue in the sermon. Yet a church shouldn't ever look like it's better then anyone else after all God save us not to puff to save us from our pitiful state that we could get ourselves out of. Whenever a church deals with sin in what ever way it should always be with a broken heart. You can be bold an unapologetic when it comes to sin but it should please please brother I don't want to see you on the other side of the pit please brother come back with me.

EDITED How about we talk about our OWN sinful lifestyles? My sinful lifestyle: I was a moralist, a try-hard, who had some failures but only very religious people would care about the failures - so i thought. Then I read 'love your enemies, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.' That's when i saw my moralism. God showed me that His way was beautiful, loving and good, and also vulnerable and let enemies hurt you. I DID NOT want that - so i knew i didn't want God's goodness, I wanted MY goodness. If I'm honest w people, share my own need for Christ, then they want to hear the gospel, Jesus and the Spirit will help us see the parts of their life God - and our own - that He wants changed (all of it, no?).

@@itsjkforreal that is a good practice but some sins need to be confronted and just like scripture convicted you of sin so can the reproof of a brother. In fact multiple time throughout the new testament we are called to call out sin. For example Matthew 18 which can go so far as to kick someone out of church. We are always to work on our sins and we are called to use equal measurements when it comes to all things meaning we can judge some one for a sin we are partaking in ( I believe an accurate teaching would bd currently actively involved in but that is speculation). I'll give an example of my life I was struggling quiting a sin and it cause a divide between me and my potential wife's family. They ended up confronting my sin saying im living in sin made it clear it was a sin and I need to work harder on it an still they were broken as they were dealing with me.

It's actually awesome, reading the comment and the replies to it. I think that I am a Christian. Filthy and rotten at my core. Then God came to me. He cleaned me up from the inside out. It's finished. And He's graciously continuing to sanctify me. Darlings...it'll happen in the twinkling of an eye...and I'll meet up with you lovely friends at the Throne...or in Papa's kitchen...or wherever Jesus is...and in Him...with Him...we'll have the time of our lives. Till then we are struggling on...and Jesus is Lord. Big love to you from England... Xxx

@@Jondoe_04 Hey, thanks for sharing your understanding. I hear you say we can reprove a brother, and that this is in scripture. I believe this with you. I hear you talking about Matthew 18, which i call 'the escalation procedure', and you say 'go so far as to kick someone out of church.' And in the two letters to the Corinthians we see Paul writing about a time this had to be done. I have to note tho that to see Matt 15-18 without dilligently applying the context of the whole chapter (and as much as we can, the whole bible), risks a return to law. That would go against grace (see Gal 5). When you say - quotes here - "we can judge someone for a sin we are partaking in" - alright. However how do we reconcile this with His sayings 'judge not, lest you be judged' and 'who are you that judges another man's servant' and 'if your brother sins against you seven times in a day..." ? And how does a person become my brother/sister/family in the first place, so that we can safely rebuke them, knowing they are in Christ? Knowing therefore that He will guide my words and their hearts? Is it not by what we have in common - the need for mercy and grace, and His provision of these? When you say 'they were broken as they were dealing with me'... do you mean they were humble? Kind? Remembering their own sin as they told you honestly of yours?

@13:49 "We have to have each other. Only together... will we see all of what the glory of the gospel is... The more homogeneous a church is, the more likely it is to have enormous blind spots". That said, perhaps it's time to re-evaluate the PCA's stance on the ordination of women and gay people🤔.

If I'm trying to 're-evaluate' for them, or on them, and not deeply with them, i have at least missed the whole point of this sermon, and probably a big part of Romans 14-15. I wrote way too much earlier, and had to cut this down... ...I woke up too early, and will now get to sober morning. Got work to do besides talking over these good things. Thanks for letting me share. Pray for me. For us.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 "Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God"

Romans 1:22-32 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them. Context determines meaning... Homosexuality is not cultural, it is an abomination to God and a perversion of the divine gift of human sexuality.
