Hopes of the Living Dead is based on a true story about the life, times and challenges of Ikoli Harcourt Whyte in Port Harcourt during the colonial era in the early 1920s. The play is set in a leprosy ward where the patients who were supposed to get treatment for their ailment rather got maltreated, stigmatized and threatened to be ejected from the hospital for fear of an epidemic. Led by the famous Harcourt Whyte, the hospital ward becomes a country in macrocosm as the oppressed people put aside their differences to stand against oppression and firmly resolve to stay put until adequate arrangements are made for them to be taken to the permanent site with better facilities at Uzuakoli.
